Q: When will Makita update this (and a few others) planer with a brushless motor? Many of their tools haven’t been refreshed in 4 years.

A brushless version is available now. It's called the XPK02 and it's about 100 dollars more. It's got a couple quality of life improvements in addition to the new motor.

Q: Does this item come with an 18v battery?

Makita Model XPK01Z planer is a cordless bare tool meaning the battery and charger are not included. If you do not already have Makita 18 volt battery and charger, these items will need to be purchased separately.

The Makita XPK01Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-1/4-Inch Planer for $169.00 is a 'bare tool.' As such it includes NO accessories. The ‘Makita 123060-6 Bevel Guide For N1900B Planer’ and the ‘Makita 164371-0 Straight Rule Guide For N1900B & 1912B Planer’ are both available from Amazon for less than $20.00 each.

Q: Can you flatten a rough tabletop with this? Coffee table? Or just single boards. Thanks

You could. You will need lots of practice to get good at it. I have a 6 & 1/4 makita for this but the narrower versions like this are really helpful to have and will still work faster than a belt sander. I use a belt sander to finish - evening out all the overlapping grooves once everything is as flat as i can get it. If you are dealing with end grain (like a large stump table), this is about the only way to go as the belt sander moves even slower then.
