After a trip away where we spent time visiting some galleries exhibiting Edward Hopper I was compelled to find out a bit more about the artist himself as well as his many wonderful paintings , this book is a good clear concise account giving a good over view . Lots of lovely photos of his work . Please be aware this is the English language version , I noticed a lot of folk bought the German version in errorPlease take a moment to hit the helpful button and make my time reviewing worthwhile 🥰

Lack of Full Sized Images otherwise just OK from the Updated (2015) & Smaller Basic Art Series
Overall I have enjoyed this book but feel compared to other titles in the series it's a bit of a let down. There could have been more images, better variation/placement of the images and certainly a fair few more full page sized images. I don't think it has as much re-read potential as others in the series but I'm sure will still be enjoyed by fans of the artist or those looking to complete a collection of these books.I started my collection of the Taschen 'Basic Art' series a while back with the original series in its hardback format, which were fairly large coffee-table style books. This is from the new Basic Art 2.0 series which was introduced for the series' 30th anniversary last year (2015). This is again the hardback version of the book but these books are approximately half the size now, but still a reasonable size measuring 26.4 x 21.6 x 1.3 cm and this is reflected with these hardback versions being considerably cheaper that the larger books released in the first series. Just be aware that any books in this newer series (with a release date of 2015 or later) will be one of the smaller books and not the larger ones from the original series unless specifically stated. The quality is still the same as with the original series - the production is slick with very good illustrations/reproductions which reproduce the colours well, never over-doing the soft tones often found in Hopper's work but I didn't feel this book dedicated a good enough portion of the book to decent sized images of the paintings. This book, featuring many of the classic and brooding works of Hopper, contains only around 22 full page sized images (and some of those aren't strictly full page size) which is less than others in thie series and is instead made up mostly of smaller images, with 69 other images which vary between half-page sizes, quarter page sizes and some much smaller images. The works are organised reasonably nicely although sometimes the subject matter is too repetitive and I found myself flicking forward for something different, so perhaps they could have been mixed up a little more. The images are of course broken up with text from the author and as always, the accompanying text can be a bit hit and miss with this series. In this book there is a decent amount of text and information from the author and I found this read well, was informative and not too intrusive but gave enough detail to enlighten someone new to the world of Hopper. I enjoyed learning more about Hopper as although I know much of his work I've never really read up on him before.95 pages in total with the final two pages dedicated to a very brief history of Hopper's life and works, including a couple of photos of the artist. I think at it's current price this is a well-priced book and will serve as a decent enough into to the artist but probably won't do too much for anyone who has already explored a lot of his work or life. The cover does look great though and is still a nice enough addition to the series if you're collecting these.
