Beautifully curated interviews with key people behind the recent wave of AI advances
This book is a gift to our society. These are beautifully crafted and curated interviews with 23 people-- most of whom have been direct and highly instrumental research and/or technology contributors to the recent wave of phenomenal AI progress, and a few others who are prominent and deeply knowledgeable observers, policy analysts and critiquers of AI trends and their future implications. There is no hype in this book. Everyone of the 23 interviews is with a deeply knowledgeable and thoughtful subject matter expert who responds to basic and fundamentally important questions about AI capabilities, AI limitations, trajectories for directions and progress, and their personal views on a few key societal impact issues. The beautiful thing about this book is that-- aside from the author Martin Ford's intro (1st chapter) and summary (last chapter), all of the speaking is done by the experts themselves, in their voice, with their own personal way of explaining core concepts, and their own personal views of social issues and impacts.Congratulations to Martin Ford for bringing this book to the world, so that we can all have such direct and intimate access to the the carefully stated and well written thoughts of these extraordinary collection of people who are all so deeply knowledgeable about AI (including past, present and future aspects of AI).I have been following this topic- very actively-- for over 35 years--- and even with all of that background, I find this a highly informative and delightful read. If you are not a specialist in this field, and you want a reliable and high quality way to get introduced to the big ideas and the big issues, this is a must read.Even if you are a specialist in the field, you will probably enjoy seeing the way that some of the world's foremost experts in these areas explain some of the basic and core concepts. This is NOT a book of hype. This is NOT a book that will tell you have to immediately revamp your business strategy. This IS a book that helps you understand the big and important ideas- but in very clear and easy to understand language. Through the interviews, the book clearly explains the foundational concepts and issues, both technological and social, and gives you a very good way to understand the current situation with AI capability and the directions for ongoing capability development.

An Insightful, "What the Experts Think" Overview of AI
Maybe the best book I've read on AI. Want to know what the experts think about things like the dangers vs. benefits of AI, the current state of the technology, what's accurate and what the media gets wrong, and written in a way that the same questions are consistently addressed so you get an apples-apples comparison? This is the book for you. You'll also learn some basic primer level stuff in terms of things like "AI" right now, does not exist. Everything we see advertised and talked about is actually an example of Machine Learning (ML), which is a fancy term for teaching really powerful computers to get really good at recognizing very specific kinds of patterns and then recommending actions based on the results. Image analysis, stock trading, etc etc.None of these computers are "intelligent" in the traditional sense of the word, and so you learn pretty quickly where we're at, and where we're likely to go, according to a whole cast of very intelligent programmers, business technologists and data scientists. I think if every journalist in America read this book we'd get a much better quality of reporting on this topic and citizens better informed. Until then you can read the book instead. : )

What an amazing book!
What an amazing book! It will wake you up about artificial intelligence. Anyone can read this and everyone should. I can't believe what they can make AI do now after reading this book. These experts are colorful and interesting, and the book is easy to dip into and learn new things about AI on every page. For instance, Rana el Kaliouby can make AI read your mind at your next job interview - who'd know? Stuart J. Russell scared the living daylights out of me, because he thinks we have to rethink a lot of stuff about our jobs and whether AI takes over a lot of things. But AI is also going to cure a lot of illnesses - so there are some BIG wins for everybody with AI.I'm stoked, scared, and ready to step into the future with AI. This book WILL excite you about what AI can do, even and sometimes it will scare you. They just have to get AI done right - so that it HELPS us. Martin Ford asks the experts all the BIG questions we need to know about. I can recommend this book.

Where to Begin in Understanding Artificial Intelligence
Whether you are fed up with robo calls, or wondering if the TV stations have forgotten, how to spell, wondering what your next computer might be like, or thinking about careers for your children, in other words no matter what problem you face today, this work has something to tell you. As noted in the book some technologies , electrification for example, just transform everything. AI is very likely to be one of them. But how does one approach a new unknown, what questions to think about and ask, and where might one go to find information to any depth? This book is a gateway to AI for all levels of technical competence and contains links to any depth of the technology you wish to pursue. No it is not always an exciting read, how many really exciting engineers and scientists have you met? But it is always a surprising one. A book to read, follow the links from, and come back to as you gain more life experience with AI.

Interviews with major figures in AI
The author asks multiple senior figures in the field of AI:1. What is the possibility of attaining Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)?2. When is AGI likely to emerge?3. What are the current trends in AI?4. How likely is the Chinese dominance of AI?The answers to these questions are not digested by the author into a thematic discussion, but the presentation is that of an edited transcript of the interviews that were conducted. The reader is left to make their own judgements.

A really outstanding comprehensive collection of these days AI thoughts
Even though it has an enormous volume, this book never tended to get boring. Each next interview opened up new aspects and shed light on the topics from a different perspective. This is a must read for everyone engaged in the field of AI - which is kind of the bottom line of the whole book: Don’t stop critical thinking about this, but also don’t be (too) pessimistic!

AI Evolution.
Very informative about the interactions between various specific AIs. Once the gathering systems can learn by hearing and seeing, they will be what runs the planet. The question of how humans survive after AI is very interesting. The real thing is that AI is evolving faster than humans but will it level out at a higher level than us or will it evolve way beyond us? Will we be useful to them.?? The next few centuries will tell.
