The King Has A Cross in His Crown That Actually Looks Like A Cross Not Some Obscure Deformity!
I grew up playing with the Staunton Design where the King has a REAL AND CLEAR CROSS IN THE CROWN not some obscure deformity like most of the chess sets on the market. This chess set has an Authentic King and all the other pieces are beautifully designed as well. However, ChessHouse.com has the best looking king on the market. I bought a set from them that is identical with the one I have growing up. It is plastic and weighted. TheBestChessSetEver has the Silicone Board which is much more versatile than the cheap vinyl boards that have been around for decades. This chess set is great! The Silicone Board has a slight odor. The odor will subside if you leave it outside for a couple of days. The Silicone Board is nice and big (20" x 20") and is very flexible and waterproof. You can eat and drink while playing with no worries of any damage to the board or pieces. The pieces are Quad-Weighted so they are nice and heavy. You can play outside and not worry about the wind blowing the pieces off the board. I really like this chess set!

These people make a great product at a fair price.
What a nice chess set. I think $50 is certainly a fair price. I would of paid closer to $80 and I wouldn't have felt bad about the deal. The pieces look and feel amazing. The pieces aren't trying to look like they're made out of some material they're not like wood or marble. Whatever they're made out of they have a quality look about them and they don't look cheap. They're also weighted very nicely. Another plus is the silicone board. Much nicer than vinyl - take my word on it. I wanted to take the time to add a review to this product again because the vender has earned it. I paid less than $50 for this set and at the time I did not realize the sweet deal this product is. After some experience ordering chess sets I now understand what a bargain this set is. You get quality chess pieces that go for $60 to$80 purchased alone. And have you priced the "VINYL" boards that comes with the set. They are $20 TO $40 when purchased alone. "WATCH THAt SHIPPING AND HANDLING", I know they're out of stock right now. I would wait and buy this set.

Not Quite, but Maybe
I learned to play chess just two years ago, at the age of 52. Yes, I know, such a shame. And I agree. I now feel it should be a universal game. Anyhow, since learning, I've looked for a quality chess set that looked good, felt good, and faired well over time. My sons and I are very impressed with this set. It is like the quality, size, and weight of the pieces just makes playing chess a fair bit more enjoyable. No, it isn't like that...the pieces do make playing more enjoyable. The foldable board is great for travel. But, hey, if there is one misplaced criticism: I'd prefer a quality solid board to go along with these fabulously crafted and weighted chess pieces. Five full starry-cheers from us!

Amazing set easily a 10/10
Purchased this set after looking through a lot of competitors boards. The two details that sold me on this set was the fact that the pieces are heavy, and the pieces are large. Most chess sets are tiny in comparison and made of wood. This set is made out of plastic and is perfectly weighed down and the combo of the really nice plastic pieces and the weight make for a set that feels like it should cost a lot more then what it does. The board is the only “complaint” I have as I don’t feel like it has the durability that the pieces obviously do but for what it is I absolutely love it. I especially like that it has a green and white side and a black and white opposite side. Overall you can’t go wrong with this board and I guarantee it’ll put most other sets you have out of use because you’ll just want to play on this one 😊.

Fine enough set, but some real caveats on both the 4X and the 3X sets
I'll start with the good about the 4X weighted set (I bought and returned both the 3X and the 4X for reasons below). The 4X weighted set: heavy pieces, nice color, looked like a nice board (for silicone), and under the right circumstances, I'd have kept it. But I didn't because of the bad about it part. The bad part is that when I took the pieces out of the box to check out my new horses, BIG LETDOWN. The knights shown in the photo (see screenshot attached) for the 4X pieces are NOT the knights you will receive. They are not the Arabian style with the wild mane. They are the same horses you'd receive with the 3X weighted. So I didn't even undo the rest. I paid more $$ for the right knight, so back the 4X went, and I downgraded to the 3X. I never even took the board out, or I'd have found the problem that would have resulted in my return of the 3X set. Now about the 3X set... What's good about it: it costs less than the 4X set and there's no disappointment about the knight. Hard stop there, however. The color is a bright, plasticey white (not as nice as the 4X set), and much to my chagrin, I found out on the second go-round that neither are magnetic. So why did I think it was magnetic? Well, for the same reason I thought that I was getting the cool knights with the 4X set - the product information given. Hello, seller, fix that, please. In this case, the question "How do these pieces compare to typical magnetic chess pieces?" and answer is very misleading. Perhaps because I review contracts and parse words, the lack of clarity was more obvious to me. IDK, but when I read that Q&A, I thought that these were then "atypical magnetic chess pieces", heavier, etc., but also magnetic because never did the respondent say "oh, well, first of all, these are not magnetic, is a big reason they're different - they're different because they're not magnetic". A sentence along those lines would have been really, really helpful to me since I wanted a magnetic set (just starting to play and cats - magnetic is a must). So my misunderstanding, but hopefully, if you're reading this review, and you thought the set was magnetic, then you can save yourself the trouble. The 3X set was, IMO, more meh than the 4X set. Overall, if I had lots of room, no cats, didn't care about magnetic pieces, and could get over the disappointment about the knight, I'd probably have kept the 4x set, but I don't have $60 to toss at upper meh, and that's kinda where I landed on the 4x. I wouldn't get the 3x at all. I ended up getting a nice little travel set that is magnetic and has a green and white board (I've read green is supposed to help with learning). A heck of a lot less money, and it works for me because I can carry it around easily and obsess (I'm just starting to play, and I'm really, really awful, not even through all of the lessons yet, but I do plan to get to 'plain old awful' level someday, and that will make me really happy - just an amazing game.)

Having recently retired, I recently began playing chess again after a 40+ year hiatus, and wanted a board to take travelling and to use outside on a deck or perhaps a picnic table while camping. After much research I chose this set (the XL quad-weighted set), based partly on the positive reviews here. It arrived in just a couple of days. This is every bit the excellent set other reviewers claim it to be. The plastic chess pieces are BIG, well-weighted, felted and molded in very pleasing detail. They are plastic but do not feel plasticky at all. The seams are very subtle, and the pieces, while plastic, feel like substantial, quality pieces in my hand. The white pieces are not white but rather a creamy ivory that is perfect for the white pieces as opposed to a stark and sterile pure white. Each set has its own drawstring pouch for storage. A serviceable little booklet on the fundamentals chess concepts/strategy is included, as well as a curious bag of crafter's googly eyes, which might be nice for kids but I wouldn't mess with the already nice presentation of the pieces by making them goofy. But that's just me. The silicon board (mat) is big, and is reversible (black/white and green/white) - a nice touch - and easy to roll up and store for travel. There are some folds and pinches in the surface that are obvious results of folding the material to fit the smallish box, which I wouldn't recommend, especially for any long period if time. I am currently laying the board flat with some weight on top to try to reduce the blemishes; if this doesn't work I will contact the seller to request a replacement of the mat. The manufacturer seems to already be aware of the potential for this sort of packaging-induced flaw, and does offer explicitly on a card included with the set to make right on any such flaws in the board and also the pieces. As this is my only gripe about the set, I am comfortable reviewing this as 5 stars given the excellent product and good customer service promise. It really IS worth every cent for the overall quality of the set (a much higher quality than my shaky chess game skills right now!). A recommendation to make excellent even better: A larger box or ideally, a tube, to contain the set without having to fold the board. Stuffing all this goodness repeatedly into a small box may eventually compromise the pieces and will compromise the mat. I picked up a $4 UPS 24" mailing tube to store the mat, and may later pick up a more robust plastic poster tube with shoulder strap for about $15. So many chess sets on Amazon, but for a quality outdoor-friendly and waterproof set with pieces you'd be proud to display on ANY board, you won't find as good or better at this price point. Well done, Gaylen Pyle, creator of the set! (and yes, I AM reading that serviceable little manual/strategy guide!). UPDATE: As expected, the seller was quick to process a replacement board, since some of the dings in the silicon mat didn't smooth out. I emailed their warranty people and all they needed was my order info and address and a few pics of the board. Then they promptly emailed me back to let me know my replacement is being shipped, directly from the manufacturer. The new mat was free of pinches or creases and shipped in a tube. Customer service the way it is supposed to be done. Great product, great service.

The actual pieces are great. Nice design, size, and weight - albeit plasticky. Satisfying to handle. The rubbery board is fine; what you lose in flatness you gain in portability. Reasonable value on sale at $50. The box and bags have silly slogans in giant text on them Not my style at all. Especially for a portable set that other people are going to see. I found a replacement neutral box, and I'm looking for replacement bags. Hard to get the right size. The bags supplied are of a thin synthetic fabric. Cotton bags would be nicer. That the "best chess set ever" has such obvious room for improvement is ... a weak move.
