The Indispensable Dictionary of Unusual Words: Over 6,000 Obscure and Preposterous Words to Know, Learn, and Love Paperback – July 1, 2012

Something to add to our reference collection; with english and foreign language dictionaries this is more a mixture of English and foreign words with sprinkling of Latin to add. Lots of unusual/unusable vocab however, never boring. Not quite a scholars type tome either. With this title, any additional bucket full of regular english vocab words would be a welcome addition. Tobe understood while speaking and understanding while listening, rarely isit necessary to pop in words with fourteen -nineteen letters. (It's difficult enough talking with internet serviceusing smaller words.) Great effort tothe authors; a HS class could probablydesign/build a similar structure andthrow in a chapter including prefixesand suffixes adding bunches of wordsin the process; new maps, and apossible addition of different currenciesin use in different countries with business designated math problems used within the aerospace, farming,semiconductor industries using different wholesale pricing and metricmeasures.

Got it for my teen's birthday and they loved it!

My son and I have always loved crazy, funny, obscure words, that are not used anymore. Not only are you amazed that there is actually a word for the "that", but the word itself is so strange and hilarious. This book is entertaining and educational. We love it.

My favourite game is Fictionary, and I bought this dictionary to play it. I opened it randomly when it first arrived, and already knew five of the first six words I encountered - but there are enough new and truly obscure words (and concepts) to make this dictionary an entertaining addition to my dictionary collection.

This dictionary has both more words new to me and more that I remember discovering in works of fiction (eg, Stephen R. Donaldson) than many other unusual-words collections.

I read a little bit every day and there is always a great new word to learn

I have this is my toilet library, this is a compliment as it is an interesting and informative read, you can dip into or learn new words at length.

I can't resist a good word book. I must have dozens of them! This was most interesting.

Bought as a gift. The contents looks ok however, the quality of the paper is rather poor making the typeface look blurred and not so easy to read. From the quick look I had it does not seem to be as amusing as I had hoped for. Would I recommend this? Probably not!
