Mesozoic Fossils II: The Cretaceous Period

The book was well Illustrated it probably more in mind for high school age students interested in paleontology

Great book, interesting fossils.

This book if filled with a lot of information that even the novice can understand. It has tons of accompanying photos to go with that information.

This well-illustrated book should make a little science quite palatable to the general reader. I hoped for some solid information, but found none. It is, however not incredibly dull like my Paleontology text in college.

I bought this book for the 20 pages of text and pictures near the end on the Chronister Site, a Cretaceous location in southern Missouri of shale and mud from which Hypsibema missouriensis, the Missouri state dinosaur, (a hadrosaur) was extracted. I wasn't disappointed, because Dr. Stinchcomb is one of the foremost experts on this particular creature. I also bought it because my geology field camp was held in Lander, Wyoming, near where many types of Mesozoic creatures thrived and were preserved.Although Cretaceous dinosaurs are amongst the most popular to the general public, and this book does have a few photos of Triceratops, otherwise Stinchcomb concentrates on sea creatures, such as the ammonites and turitella species, the bony fish and the concept of the Cretaceous (chalk-bearing) as largely sea deposit ecosystems of on the large land animals. Knowing this up prepares the reader for the slant of this book. It does what it does well, it is not a kids' dinosaur book.
