The Magic Order Volume 1

Kind of like Harry Potter for Adults
The Magic Order is a bit like Harry Potter but with mature content. Overall, this is an interesting book, but the graphic imagery is problematic and certainly limits its appeal.[POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD]The basic story traces the rise and apparent fall of a magical family when confronted by a rival mage. The supposed hero of the series is not what he seems, and the true hero that emerges is very unexpected.A final warning: Be careful when ordering this from Amazon. My copy arrived in an oversized mailer and was broken across the spine and rather mangled.

Worth your time. Very good art. And Miller.
Mr. Miller's story flow is becoming predictable after reading oh..... All of his works probably. So..... That's on me really. He's great. Great art on this one too. My favorite work of Mr. Miller's is Wanted, and his run on The Authority. When he follows Ellis it usually is quite entertaining. Anyway now you see my likes. This is worth a read I'd say. Is it the best of Miller..... No. Is it better than 80% (conservative estimate) of all comics? Hell yeah.

Worth the read ... Some potential spoilers
It's a different take on the standard secret-magic genre. Magic is only practiced by few and remains unknown to the populace at large, however, the plot is not weighted down by the history and complexity of the titular order. The interactions between relatives drive the plot instead. The story centers around three grown siblings each with a defining character trope: the good egg who will remain dutiful to familiar obligations, the disappointment who can't help but be a screw up, and the black sheep, who according to others, is wasting his potential. Their interaction with their father will also feel familiar, but the character walks the line between disinterest and tough love. The ending had a good twist and there are seeds planted for further character development; furthermore, even with some unanswered back stories the volume could stand alone.I deducted a star because, I felt some character deaths came too quickly in relation to their arc. Then again I am fairly new to reading graphic novels, and a long time reader of the traditional variety; so ending the arc early might be common way to tie up loose threads.Final thoughts ... Loved the "throwing the book" magic but wouldn't Crime and Punishment show a gulag, not American style cops? I know I am being nitpicky about details but if you're gonna mention a deep-cut like Wilder's adaptation of Stalag 17 (love his films) than all details should count.

Enjoyed this volume and think you will also.
Enjoyed this initial volume. It did seem like it was a little ‘made for the screen’ but I ddI appreciate that it is a self contained story with a defined ending, at least for this chapter. Always dislike it when the end is nowhere in sight, or there aren’t at least some stopping points along the way.

10/10, will be rereading again
Fantastic read, and the artwork is top notch. I loved all of the characters and hope to see more of their backstory in future books. It’s definitely graphic, hence the clear M/Mature rating, which is there for a reason. This is a strong start to the series, and I highly recommend it if you want to read about badass magicians battling in the shadows, with the fate of the world at stake.

fun stuff
it was short, but it was fun. Looking forward to the second part, which when they both are incorperated into a single volume will make it even better (given that the second part is as fun). Cheers.

Not for kids.
If a magical world was aimed for an adult audience for HBO. Is the best way to simplify the description of this book.R Rated, Highly Entertaining, Beautiful Artwork and a Great Storyline.

One of the best comic books that I've read in years!
I don't even know where to begin. The story is so amazing and Copiel delivers on the art in an astonishing way. If you are a fan of comics, magic, and mysteries, you will want to pick this book up immediately. The only thing bad about The Magic Order is that there isn't more of the story.

Arrived in mint condition, just not one of Millar's best stories.
If your looking to read some of the stellar writing that Millar can produce, you unfortunately, won't find it in this book. It's a good story and the grounded use of magic gave it a real sense of danger and reality itself became a villain in its own right. This is backed up by some great art and panel work. But unfortunately the story falls a little flat by the end. The reveals didn't grip me like real magic nor the magic Millar often encapsulates in his work. Overall it's a great read for any who like the idea of it but I personally won't be picking up the next volume.

You'll like it' not a lot but you'll like it.
This looked like rather a fun fantasy, a civil-war between an ancient order of magicians. The art work looked quite cool. Unfortunately it was a lot like an A.E. van Vogt novel and felt a bit like that 1970s kids' TV show Ace of Wands. It contained the whole baddies fooled by an illusion whilst casting an illusion which is a hackneyed cliche by now. It wasn't a bad comic but it wasn't good either.

Lacking
This book feels like what it is... a draft set of notes for a TV series. All the big story moments are here but there's no connective tissue to join it all together. Somewhere there is a storyboard with all of the scenes from this book on it and then a while bunch of blank spaces where other stuff should be.

Hardcore Harry Potter
Usual Miller excellence,a nice mix of Harry Potter meets Game of Thrones.A self contained story but hints at a bigger world.Enjoyed it.Not in my top 3 of Millers work, but still loved it.

Nothing like Harry snotter
Magic order stands on its own as a graphicnovel and although its a quick read I found it very enjoyable but totally for adults. Could have done with more magical creatures and who else thinks a certain character looks like Jeremy corbyn
