A Must Read for ALL Health Care Providers
Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders in the 24/7 world we live in. It's estimated that about 30% of the industrialized population has occasional bouts of insomnia during any given time and that fully 10% of the population has chronic insomnia. Although hypnotics can be helpful - they appear to be most helpful in transient insomnias (usually caused by transient stresses) which occur from time to time in people who are generally good sleepers. Hypnotics are also helpful in those with chronic insomnia but when stopped the insomnia typically recurs. In other words the effect of hypnotics is not a durable effect after the hypnotics are stopped.Cognitive behavioral therapy of chronic insomnia, on the other hand, is every bit as effective as hypnotics (the effect sizes are similar) but cognitive behavioral therapy has durable effects which can be measured up to a year after therapy has been completed. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the foundation of therapy for chronic insomnia. Yet until recently, there haven't been many "good" references on how the non-sleep specialist actually provides this type of therapy. This book answers that need. This book, written by several of the world's experts on insomnia, is a practical guide for the practitioner that describes the various components of cognitive behavioral therapy of insomnia (CBTI). CBTI combines aspects of sleep hygiene, stimulous control, sleep restriction, and cognitive therapy into an integrated approach. The session by session guide will be helpful to all counsellors - the authors provide a very rational and "doable" integration. Each session builds on progress made in the previous section. And the book has sufficient background information in the beginning to give most practioners a reasonable exposure to some fundamental principles of sleep medicine.Practicing psychologists, psychiatrists, masters level counselors, primary care providers will find this book indespensible in their practices. The book is clearly written for practitioners and fills a very needed void in the practical literature on insomnia. As a practicing sleep specialist, I give this book my highest recommendation. In fact, I've purchased several copies to distribute to health care practioners where I live - this book is a MUST read.

best insomnia treatment out there
I took the online course and got this book. I wish we could implement this with more patients. Psychologists are the best to do this. As MDs we don‘t get enough time or training for CBT, and it‘s a shame. CBT for insomnia makes much more sense than sleeping pills. Sigh

Concise yet Thorough
I was surprised by how thorough this book is while still staying fairly concise. With the index, I can find pretty much anything I'm looking for related to the topic. The book has greatly improved my practice and my understanding of primary insomnia. The only drawback it poor editing in the form of multiple typos. Otherwise, this is a great session-by-session breakdown of how to treat primary insomnia, and I can vouch for the fact that the techniques work with clients.

basic
You can find in the internet all information in this book. I tried everything but what helped me the most is this: I stopped watching TV and took 3 tablets of Formula 303 (Valerian Root) 30 minutes before bedtime.

Not just for clinicians
A terrific book that anyone with the strong desire to fix his sleep can put to good use. It truly is a session by session guide understandable for the layman, and we were able to follow the program and cure my wife's decades-long insomnia. I have the graphs to prove it! She sleeps now, and it makes a huge difference. You really can do this on your own.

Excellent tool
This book is an excellent tool for therapists to help their clients with chronic insomnia. This was recommended reading after attending a seminar on this topic hosted by the Center for Deployment Psychology. I use it in my practice quite often and have helped many of my clients get off prescription sleep aids.

Valuable guide
If you are a provider of CBT-I, this is the "must have" guide. The book is not as informative (or entertaining) as attending a training, but it is a great supplement.

CBT of Insomnia
A really good book for sleep practitioners. I am fairly new to the field of sleep and insomnia and have found the evidence based, theory driven approach to insomnia treatment, stimulating and helpful for my learning and practice.

Great for beginners
This book was recommended to me by a psychiatrist to understand cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia and it was a great introduction focusing on the practical aspects and did not get caught in too much academic theory/jargon.

Would recommend to any health care provider looking to add non-pharm ...
Concise, clear, well structured. Teaches the basics needed for this indispensable intervention in a few short hours of reading. Would recommend to any health care provider looking to add non-pharm insomnia interventions to their tool kit.
