Just curious why can't you use cardboard?

I honestly think putting cardboard in there could cause a fire with the heat. Maybe, just maybe tiny pieces, TINY PIECES maybe would cut up enough to not burn, but I would not and am not going to try it. I like this too much to attempt and maybe mess it up.

what are consumable things? filter? carbon refill pellets?

Just the filter carbon which you can purchase pelleted filter carbon in aquarium dept.
