Does it have a filter built in?

There is no filter. If you are looking for something with a filter we do have our Rabbit Super-Aerating Decanter System ASIN #B002P5BAT8. The wine can be poured into the hand-blown crystal decanter with or with out the super fine sediment screen.

Can this aerator act as a temporary cork as well or does it need to be removed when storing the wine (even for a few days)?

LEAVE IT IN! Once open, red wine becomes almost undrinkable overnight (something to think about when you order red wine sold by the glass). I don't know why or how but when I leave my aerator in the bottle my reds stay drinkable at room temperature for another two days (three days not so much). Discovered this by accident and have been doing it ever since.
