They do need direct sun to work, but that is the point of solar pumps. We have a couple of tall fountains and they seem to bring the water up quite easily even with the added height. I ordered one that did not work and the seller replaced it immediately without question, so I am pleased with this seller. The replacement is working just fine. I have no complaints and am very pleased. I am sorry to say that three days later, this little pump has stopped working and since it is a replacement for my original order, I am not going to order again from this seller. I was very pleased with the pump, as far as its' power, but, if it cannot keep working, it is useless to me. I am sorry this has happened. Review: Works well - This was the first solar fountain I've ever bought. I will probably research further for my next purchase. This one works well for the price. The solar panel has to be free of everything for it to work. One little ladybug sitting on the panel will make it stop working, I found that out. My panel faces due south and that's about the only time it works well. Because the panel is flat, it doesn't work that well when the sun is rising or setting, pretty much only between 11am and 3pm. If it's a windy day, the wind will blow the squirting water out of the bird bath and I've had to fill the bird bath up 3-4 times a day because of that and my bird bath is 24" in diameter by 3.5" deep in the middle. The "Fountain" part isn't very stable because it would't suction to my bird bath, so I had to stabilize it with some small rocks.

Good for birdbaths
I got this to have a little pump action on a birdbath to keep the water moving. It pumps about one inch without an adaptor. With an adaptor it pumps about 8-10". The motor is very efficient and runs immediately on light to the array. The pumping action is not consistent. It keeps pumping but there are surges and dips. It works fine and the action is not bad looking. There's about 10' of cord so I was able to place the solar array on a nearby metal garden rod. Mine is in direct light, but it seems to work in bright shade. If I turned the array upside down in shade it didn't work, so I'm thinking this won't work in deep shade.

Efficent & economical
This little solar fountain pump is an efficent little thing as long as the panel is in direct sunlight. I was looking for a low maintenace & economical solar panel for the water fountain at a Nursing Home. This little thing, does that. I expected that it would only work in direct sunlight, on sunny days, and that the little pump filter area would need to be cleaned daily which is all true. For my application, the long cord allows the "residents" the ability to move the "solar" panel around -- being an active participant in the maintance. The pump came with multiple attachments, the "hose" for the water flow fits perfectly onto the solar disc, allowing the water to bubble out. The water flow is strong when the sun is bright & charging the panel fully. For our application the "angels" keep the pump secure, however if you need the "suction cups" on the bottom to do the job you will need to find an alternative way of keeping the pump secure. This little solar panel meets my expecatations. However, having a "battery backup" would allow the fountain to be enjoyed on overcast days.

Would not purchase again
Did not care for this pump at all. Even in full sun it does almost nothing. It MIGHT work in a shallow bird bath but even then the water doesn't come up very high at all and not a steady flow. I would not purchase another one like this..

Great little pump!
Love this little solar fountain pump! My fountain has probably 18” from the pump to the top, so I connected a tube from the pump to the top, fitted the little included extender on it and it has plenty of power. The video shows it with one of the caps attached so that it has a spray. I wonder if the birds would use it as a birdbath? Usually I don’t attach the cap, and just let it bubble, but I wasn’t able to attach two videos. I put the little solar panel on top of the fence when it gets sun all day - the cord is more than long enough. Great little pump, should last a long time. I had the old one for a couple of years. It only died after I forgot to flip over the solar panel when I went on vacation. it ran for ten days even though the fountain was empty of water. So I can’t blame the fountain. This new one I ran for a day with an empty fountain by accident - still worked fine when I filled up the fountain.

tiny
This would probably be fine for a birdbath, but you would have to ensure that the bath never dried out. The solar panel is a decent size for the pump, but it does not have any residual power- so if you want it to run at night then pick a different pump. It will only run when panel is in direct light. The pump fully assembled is a probably all of 4" in height from the base of the pump to the top of the fountain. There are suction cups on the bottom of the pump, but they will only adhere to a smooth surface. if you just want a fountain for a tabletop bowl this is probably perfect. It is quite inexpensive so there is that. it needs clean water so not a good option for water with living organisms like fish.

Easy to use.
I can’t really answer the longevity question because I need to use a deeper and larger diameter fountain. The product works well but my bird bath has a smaller diameter so the water was spraying out of my birdbath and I was afraid that the motor would burn out. It is very easy to set up, the second you flip the screen toward the sun the motor kicks on. Great product. Would but it again.
