A brief, readable, and erudite introduction to social work theory
This book is a brief but erudite introduction to social work theory. David Howe's prose is considered, concise, and well written; his book presents the key theoretical constructs as well as the history underpinning modern social work. He also has the ability to translate complex, sometime abstruse, theories or ideas into clear and comprehensible expalnations. For this reason it is the fasvoured text of many of my students studying social work theory. In my view it is the best short introduction to the subject and I would recommend it to anyone studying social work or social care.

Does what is says on the tin...or cover!
I have just started a post grad in Social Work having had no background in theories. Similarly as the reviewer above, my lecturer too couldn't recommend this book enough (along with the Blackwell Companion) and I have to say that it is simply and wonderfully written and gives excellent explanations into such difficult theories/philosophies such as Post MOdernism and the difference between Reflexivity and Reflectivity. Really love Howe! I wish everyone would write like him! He is a joy to read!

As a social work student this is Gold
I am currently at the beginning of my social work training and university lectures have flown through psychological and sociological theories far too quickly. I found this book really clear, small enough to carry with me at all times whilst containing the necessary direction for further reading and insight.I am sure I will be reaching for this book many times in the next couple of years!
