The Walled Garden

This was a present to my daughter who seems very happy with it, and with its numerous photographs. It took 2 months to get here from a Canadian bookshop but arrived in great condition and was beautifully packed.

I bought this as we've just moved to a house with a large walled garden. It's packed full of ideas and images as well as a very good read. Love it!

The book presents walled gardens from all eras and continents, but with a focus on England. Perhaps not all gardens described here would be considered walled gardens by everyone, but they are interesting all the same. The text is readable and competent. The pictures were not especially commissioned, but taken from various sources - with mixed results. Some are excellent, others are not even sharp. It always pays to have a specialized garden photographer at hand, such as Andrew Lawson. Likely not the ultimate book yet on walled gardens, but a commendable one.

I bought this book principally for inspiration for redesigning areas of my garden, and it didn't disappoint. There are absolutely loads of photos, and although these are fairly large gardens - and therefore exactly what I was after, there are photos of smaller areas within the gardens and tableaux which would provide ideas for anyone with a less than grand garden. It has a good mix of traditional and contemporary gardens from around the world. It's divided up into gardens, each with a brief history/description, so if you wanted detailed information on a particular garden you would have to look elsewhere, but it does have some history at the beginning of the book and several gardens from around the world are included. I found it interesting to find gardens that I hadn't heard of before and would consider visiting after having seen them in the book.
