(ISBN: 9780452272040) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Great Book about Identifying Life Traps and Recovering from them. Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavioral therapy - This is a great book with a great program. The title is sort of silly, and belies what is on offer. The format of the book is to identify different kinds of life traps, to evaluate yourself for them, and to work through them. There are about ten. Including Dependency, Subjugation, Defectiveness, and so forth. These are schemas (stories, scripts, and patterns) that you identify with and perpetuate, and they can keep you stuck. You may have heard of CBT. This is essentially Cognitive, Emotional, and Behavioral therapy. The authors maintain that it is useful to work on all three levels. One thing this book really helped me understand that there are reactive and counter-reactive elements to life traps. For example, someone with a Dependency life trap may fall into dependent, submissive patterns of learned helplessness. But some people can also be Counter-Dependent, covering over insecurity by being reactively and even aggressively independent. But the problem and the life trap are still there. Review: Excellent book with emphasis on the basic core life schemas ... - Excellent book with emphasis on the basic core life schemas that bring people to therapy and mental issues of all sorts. In my opinion this book is valuable in providing one important point, being most people experiencing mental illness/ problems place to my emphasis on their symptoms, trying to "fix it" quick. What needs to be the main approach to recovery is how, why and when these symptoms became a result of living a life with a misguided/ incorrect inner working models (schema) which was a learnt behavior more commonly adapted within a childhood environment as a means to "survive". Problem being these learnt survival behaviors and perceptions become severely outdated and may lead to basic or severe mental illness of all spectrum. in my own brief conclusion, take care of the seed (schema), and the mental illness tree will fall ! - I am a recover from depersonalization disorder and this book was one of the most helpful in understanding my situation and a ways to move forward into recovery. Books like these are extremely beneficial in providing that first step to recovery, UNDERSTANDING. then the action part follows. Loose the denial, embrace change, and you are on your way to a quick recovery. Anyone and everyone does have the power to recover ! the brain can change, its called neuroplasticity, which is another topic to cover. All the best to anyone who is suffering, there is hope ! dont give up, do not avoid.

Absolutely worth it!
I was quite sceptical when I was first told to read this book because I have read other books on cognitive therapy and I had been bitterly disappointed but this book changed things for me. I also found that how I felt was completely normal at the time because I still get the same reaction from others to whom I recommend this book. All one has to do is to be really open to change and the suggestions and advice in this book can definitely change one's life for the better. It is not easy to leave old habits behind and to learn new ones and I often wondered, whilst reading it, if I could be bothered with this life long task. Because remember, it IS a life long task. It is a journey that you have to embark on to change years and years of ingrained thinking patterns which is ever so hard to, first, get your head around and then secondly, to actually action. But please try it and do not despair because with the help of this wonderful book everyone can obtain the ability to break free from life traps that prevent us from living a psychologically better life, becoming more self-aware and altogther calmer and more in control. I really suggest that you take the chance! You will thank me for it later...

10/10 What I Needed!
I don't normally write reviews but I hope this helps someone. My own therapist suggested this book during our first session. I am not going to lie, I was quick to judge the book by its title. I just thought this was another self help book full of bs but I bought it anyway as I felt so hopeless. Currently I feel as if I am stuck in this unbreakable loop of problems. Can't quiet put my finger on why my relationships with people aren't going well, why I don't have any confidence in myself, my negative habits ect. I'll tell you now this book has helped me so much. Its an easy read in terms of language but it is also a difficult read as at times I felt like I was being called out. Like I was being discussed. Some of it I can't relate to but I can put my own personal spin on things. They break down their theories and ideas in an easy manner. It's a mixture of different psychological approaches that therapists use in the field all the time. Each chapter highlights its objectives perfectly, a great combination of guidance and theory. The guidance given feels achievable, it's the first time I felt as if there was a light at the end of this tunnel that I have been stuck in for years. I cannot praise this book enough, I suggest everyone give it a read. You'll be surprised at how much you learn. Please be aware this might not work for you but I really hope it does. The book does state that if your problems are serious, to please seek therapy and I suggest you do the same. Its not a quick fix book and this book is very self aware in that sense.

For the first time in my life, I got touched with the DEEPEST human misery. And it's not related with 'war, robbery, natural tragedies'. It's EVERY DAY suffering! I feel 'in debt' with the authors, for their extreme sense of humanity!

A fantastic book presenting the different lifetraps most people fall into and how to get out of them. Well-written with real-life cases of everyday people, making it warm and accessible. The marking scheme may seem a little complicated at first, but you soon get the hang of it. I now understand my own lifetraps and have the tools to stop history repeating itself.
