Safari
"Safari" was made in 1956 and is superior entertainment made at a timewhen the story was the most important part of every good movie andthe action was believeable. If there was such a thing as a 6 star rating, I would give this movie a 6 starrating because it is a story about real life experiences and does not containgrossly exaggerated action scenes. It was made by people with considerabletalent and vision - Albert R. Brocolli was co-producer (he went on to producethe highly successful James Bond movies, along with Harry Saltzman) andTerence Young was director (he directed a number of the early James Bondmovies). Brocolli was also a partner in forming Warwick Productions to makefilms in England. "Safari" is a Warwick Production. The story which was photographed on location and is based on fact, dealswith the Mau Mau uprising which was a military conflict that took place in Kenyabetween 1952 and 1960. It involved a Kikuyu dominated anti-colonial groupcalled Mau Mau and they fought elements of the British Army, auxiliaries andanti-Mau Mau Kikuyu for independence.Their method to get rid of the white settlers was by violence, both harsh andcruel. Because they had few guns, their favourite weapon appeared to be themachete which was used to strike down their victims without mercy. The mainproblem was that the settlers could not tell their friends from their enemiesand quite often their enemy was one of their most trusted native helpers. Inthe circumstances you could not become complacent, so you trusted no one.You had to be vigilant at all times - not a satisfactory environment in which tolive. The story concentrates on Ken Duffield (Victor Mature) who was a white settlerliving in Kenya at the time on a somewhat isolated property in the country. Helived there with his trusted native helpers and his young son who he adored andthey both loved each other. At that time the influence of the Mau Mau was notestablished in that area but was spreading at a rapid rate and soon their propertybecame threatened.Duffield was notified of the approaching danger whilst out on patrol and hurriedback to his homestead but arrived too late only to find the homestead torched anddestroyed with the trusted native helpers dead. Amongst the dead was his youngson who fought courageously to defend his home and was shot down at closequarters by three bullets from a supposedly loyal helper.Duffield's main thought was for revenge which in the circumstances was justifiedand he was prepared to do anything to get the person responsible. As expected, the local authorities tried to restrain Duffield from taking matters into his own handsbut this did not stop him. To circumvent the authorities, Duffield signed on to leada hunting safari into the interior. The only problem was the leader of the safari, whose main intention was to capture an elusive lion that no one had been able totrack and he was prepared to do anything to personally capture it, including killinganyone who got in his way.Eventually, the safari was ambushed by the Mau Mau terrorists and the opportunityarose for Duffield to get his revenge because the leader of the terrorists who leadthe attack on his homestead and killed his son was present. The cinephotography and the native style musical score were both impressive and itshould be pointed out that the picture ratio on the disc is in its original widescreenformat of 2.55 to 1 and not in the ratio of 1.33 to 1 as stated in Amazon's technicaldescription."Safari" is entertainment at its very best.

Very Non-PC jungle Flick will offend many today.
Sony are slowly releasing all the big-budget Warwick action films. This latest entry starring Victor Mature who did more Warwicks thananyone else (about 6)is very non PC by todays standards.Firstly a magnificient elephant is shot at the start of the film;thisdoes NOT look faked;it looks as if it was done for real.Secondly the Africans are all portrayed as "Yes Bwana" lackeys or viciouskillers.Very much of its era but if you can overlook this what we have is an actionpacked jungle adventure. The film looks great and the high definition transferfrom Sony is top drawer as always.Janet Leigh is fatally mis-cast but brawny Mature is in his element.Far less offensive and a better film IMHO is Warwicks other 1956 jungleepic ODONGO also out on DVD from Sony.Hopefully other Warwick films will follow like THE BLACK KNIGHT,A PRIZEOF GOLD,TANK FORCE,HIGH FLIGHT and ADAMSON OF AFRICA.

The movie is in Widescreen not 1.33:1 as listed
A few days ago I saw this movie was available so I ordered it immediately. I received the movie 2 days ago and watched it last night. Aspect Ratio is listed wrong... The movie is listed as 1.33:1. NOT CORRECT - Amazon screws up again. The movie is in WIDESCREEN! The quality is awesome. You won't be disappointed.

Exciting "Safari" adventure
Loved it! I adore the classic adventure films of the 50' and 60's like Mogambo (Clark Gable), White Witch Doctor (Robert Mitchum), Hatari (John Wayne) and Rampage (Robert Mitchum) and this film did not disappoint! Safari is one to watch and relish when adventure, romance and fabulous scenery were combined. If you enjoy adventure jungle films with beautiful Cinescope and Technicolor, you'll surely enjoy this Victor Mature film as well. Ah, they sure don't make films with great men like this anymore.

Remembrace
I did buy this item because it was a movie that I watched in wide screen when I had just 11 years old and I went to the cinema theater with my parents, so it is one of a few memories that I have in my heart from my childhood. I never forget that wonderful day. Since then until now that I have the DVD I watch the movie again.

I always liked Victor Mature and Janet Leigh
I always liked Victor Mature and Janet Leigh. This film was directed by Terrance Young of the Sean Connery,James Bond films. It is a grand adventure and you get to see Janet's fine bust line in a bathing shot. Very naughty for 1957. But this was a British film with 2 American stars. The Black cast were good as well. Worth buying.

SAFARI
This movie was first released in 1956(1984)2012, in Technicolour, Widescreen and runs 111 minutes. The sound and picture quality of this DVD are excellent. The film starts when Ken Duffield(VICTOR MATURE) on safari, returns home to give his son Kenny(CHRISTOPHER WARBEY) a toy tank. Ken, as a Professional White Hunter, was taking his clients to hunt a big tusker in the Northern Province of Kenya. However, another big tusker charges and Ken had to kill him with a frontal shot. Just then the DC's(district commissioner)landrover races towards Ken, which meant trouble. Ken rushes to the base camp to take the radio message. Ken is informed that 5 settlers had been killed near Rumuruti by the Mau Mau, which was near his house. Ken rushes towards his home. That night Kenny was playing with his toy tank and Aunty May(ESTELLE BRODY)tells him to go to bed. The Mau mau strike with pangas and set the house on fire. Jeroge(EARL CAMERON), one of the house boys kills Aunty May and Kenny. On arrival Ken finds the house burnt and distruction all around. Ken is informed by the police that Jeroge was responsible. But Ken is ordered to Nairobi and his licence taken. At Nairobi Eastleigh Airport, Sir Vincent Brampton(ROLAND CULVER) and his fiancee Linda Latham(JANET LEIGH) arrive for a lion safari to hunt 'Hatari' at Isiolo. Makora(LIONEL NGAKANE), Ken's gunbearer, informs Ken that Jeroge had also escaped to the North. Sir Vincent gets Ken's licence back and they plan to leave for north, were the big lion and Jeroge were. This good story of ROBERT BUCKNER is beautifully photographed in rich Technicolour by JOHN WILCOX and well directed by TERENCE YOUNG. The producer ALBERT BROCCOLI and Terence Young, later made the James Bond films. Victor Mature makes a good White Hunter. The action scenes are good and the beautiful Kenyan SAMBURU countryside and wildlife win the day. There is also a good music score by WILLIAM ALWYN. This film shows how wild safari life used to be. Today many camps will provide you similar safaris. Watch out for elephant charge and rare Maasai lion hunt. This is a very much above average African adventure.VICTOR JOHN MATURE was born on 29.1.1913 in Louisville, Kentucky, to an Italian family. After school, Mature sold candy and operated a resturant and then moved to California. He studied and acted at the Pasadena Country Playhouse. After staying in tent for 3 years, he was spotted and this lead to a first lead role in 1940, in 'One Million BC'. By 1941, he was contracted by 20th Century Fox. In 1942, he tried to enlist, but was rejected for colour blindness. After the War, he was casted by John Ford and this followed by many films. After retirement, he was hired back in 1966 and 1971. Mature was married 5 times. He died on 4.8.1999, due to Leukaemia, aged 86, at Rancho Santa Fe, California. Some other African Adventures are:-(1) Mogambo, Clarke Gable 1950(2) King Solomon's Mines, Stewart Granger 1951(3) Where No Vultures Fly, Anthony Steel 1951(4) Simba, Dirk Bogarde 1955(5) Odongo, McDonald Carey 1956(6) Something of Value, Sir Sidney Poitier 1957(7) Tarzan's Greatest Adventure, Gordon Scott 1959(8) Hatari, John Wayne 1962(9) The Lion, William Holden 1962(10)Born Free, Virginia Mckenna 1963(11)Sammy Going South, Fergus McClelland 1963(12)The Last safari, Stewart Granger 1967Having born in Kenya, I enjoyed watching this DVD.Watch and ENJOY.

Old Africa Classic...
This is an excellent addition to the slowly increasing collection of old Africa movies. I've been searching for this movie, which I saw as a kid, for a long time. The quality is first-class, and the story has stood up well to the passage of time. Hopefully we'll see more of these old movies coming to DVD, but with Beyond Mombasa last year, and now Safari, I'm not complaining.

A film that has Matured well with time.(sorry)
Not my favourite actor, Mature, but he plays his part well in this very good 50s adventure. The story is ok, and for the most the acting is very good. Yes, i enjoyed this one.
