Excellent Follow up to the Original
This is the more accessible (from a cost perspective) to the classic "Nude" book by Gibson. I actually own both. I purchased this one because I wanted to be able to enjoy the book without damaging the original, limited edition version. Make the no mistake, this new version is a first class book and the quality is to the highest standards. The images are exquisite and show the details of a woman's body, both in parts and in total. This book is one that you will keep.

Ralph Gibson is a true master.
Great reproduction in this book of many of Ralph's most famous images, and many I've never seen before. I took a workshop with him almost 30 years ago, and his instruction and art made a great difference in my photography.

Big and beautiful
Gibson's retrospective includes decades of his work - this 2012 edition includes, for example, photos that appear on the covers of books from the 1970s and 80s. The human figure is timeless, though, and the images have stood (and I'm sure will stand) the test of time.Given the range of images and styles he presents, it's hard to sum up this whole collection in any one phrase. Instead, i found many individual details to enjoy. The first two-page spread in this book (I wish there were page numbers) demonstrates that clearly. The composition as a whole captures the curves and grace of a woman's figure. On close examination, though, a few small wrinkles remind us of the model's humanity. And, in a touch I find very attractive, the tiny, pale hairs on her skin sparkle in the light. This figure isn't some airbrushed, stylized impossibility - it's a real, unique person. Throughout the hundreds of photos offered here, that same sense comes through. Those little differences of curve or shape, fold or mark, breast or genital detail matter, and distinguish each woman from every other. The book, as an object in itself, is beautifully made, too - a fitting vehicle for the exceptional art within. Finely printed on heavy, opaque paper, it's as much a pleasure to hold as to view. So why haven't I given that last star? Somehow, the images lack drama. Other photographers do more with the body's sculptural potential, or with mood, or with poses and perspectives that present a new look at the familiar human material. I like the work here, make no mistake, but did not feel that I'd learned something new in seeing it.-- wiredweird

Wonderful book
This is a stunning book. If you’re looking for erotica, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for amazing photographs using the female body as a canvas, buy it!

Far from the best of this genre
In the introduction and closing thoughts of his book photographer Ralph Gibson lets it be known that he considers a woman’s body to be beautiful and amazing. He’s right, as most of the men of the world would agree. In “Nude,” Gibson presents a fairly large (300+) collection of photos that scrutinize the female form—whole or in part—from every imaginable viewpoint. I flipped slowly through all the pages, twice, and my conclusion is that this book has some good points, but the not-so-good points were too numerous to warrant a top rating.First of all, this is a quality publication: large, heavy, and constructed with quality paper and solid binding. For avid collectors of nude photographs, “Nude” might be a great addition to one’s library. It didn’t last long in mine.I agree 100% with a previous reviewer’s comments about this collection of photos lacking drama, mood or a “new look” (very well put). Although Gibson is prolific in the sense that he got lots of women to pose for him over a career spanning decades, this book seemed more to me like a “photographic map” of the female form rather an artistic body of work. In all respects, the photos ran the gamut from “wow” to “blah”: size, lighting, contrast, exposure quality (crisp to grainy) and camera vantage point. While some of the pictures might score high from an erotic standpoint, others were borderline amateurish. Also, the artist seemed fixated in a “L’Origine du monde” kind of way, so to speak (reference to the painting by Gustave Courbet). I’ve heard people say that all photographs can be deemed “artistic,” but that doesn’t make them quality images. I found a few that were worthy of framing, but alas, they were a very small minority. It could be that I’m spoiled by other photographers (Stefan May and Howard Schatz come to mind, among so many others) who have been far superior in photographing women (nude or not) in a way that exudes beauty, personality, and all types of moods, not to mention artistic construction. Fans of Gibson and/or this art form might enjoy this book, but to others I would recommend checking out many better ones first.

A Pleasure to own!
This book is everything it promises. Beautiful pictures, mainly black & white, but this not detract from the fine skills on display. This is a book no-one should be ashamed or afraid to have on open display. There are no pictures of women lying back with their legs open wide. I thoroughly recommend it!

Fantastic Collection of Ralph Gibson's Nudes
Ralph Gibson's nudes are usually in black and white, very abstract and geometric, and he places the nude in a variety of settings. He uses natural light and masters creating the hard edge-light that shows line and shape. The book is well printed and bound.
