Sketching from the Imagination: Dark Arts

This is my favorite out of the series to recreate sketches from. Lots and lots of good sketches. You can learn a lot from this book by sketching the images on your own. Quality book. Spine and pages together great even with how I carry it around with me on the go. If you are want to draw the subject matter of this book to increase your visual library then I do recommend purchasing it.

Very cool book, the artists are super talented and creative.

The sketches and the stories behind them are great places to get inspiration from if you’re looking to expand your catalogue of sketches and drawings. And if you like the macabre or just creepy, dark fantasy world building, then this book is perfect for you.

REALLY LIKE THE ARTISTS PICTURES IN THIS BOOK. SUPER CREATIVE. HAVEN'T GOT TO READ MUCH BUT WHAT I HAVE IS INSTRUCTIVE. I WAS BUYING THE BOOK TO LOOK AT THE PICTURES MORE THAN ANYTHING. FASCINATED WITH HOW OTHERS DRAW! THIS IS LIKE THE 4TH BOOK BY THIS AUTHOR THAT I'VE BOUGHT.

Lots of inspiration here but not much technique or instruction.

This artbook contains insight and drawing techniques from various artists who are renowned in this field of dark and gothic arts. I was excited to see Abigail Larson and Justin O'Neil in here! Each advice gives not only idea on how to streamline the art process, but also reflection on how the tiny details we see and create that reflects the overall aspect of who we are and how we want to contribute to humanity in showing the deeper aspects of human psyche and existence that are being hidden from the light of the mundane.

In the fifty artists represented in this book, I found the greatest value in those that shared their backgrounds, inspirations, techniques, equipment and published art, which most of them did. But even amongst those who shared only rough sketches or were reticent about their personal lives, much can still be gained, benefiting and improving one's own artistic endeavors. Appreciated, also, was the range of subject matter, from gothic and Camillesque motifs to more supernatural and Lovecraftian imagery. Personally, I did not enjoy some of the more visceral efforts, but I still found them instructive; besides, as was mentioned in the Introduction, they go with the territory. All in all, an excellent book for illustrators, horror/fantasy fans or those who simply embrace the darkness. I'm looking forward to eventually getting the other volumes in this series about sketching, usually an underserved aspect of art.

Depends what you want it for. Its not great for instruction. It doesnt aim to teach much in the way of drawing techniques. But if you want a book that can flick a creative switch in your brain, then this book can do that. Like all in this series, i have come to use them more to jog my own creative ideas than anything. And they are an invaluable resource for that. Seeing how other artists approach the subject is a good nudge when you are stuck on how to get your own ideas out of your head and down on paper. I will say though, if you are a beginner, there is a way of becoming confident with a pencil by copying; I am not advocating plagiarism here, but as you see students studying the masters in art galleries, it is a way of learning. You cant go far wrong with the artists included in this book. All are competent, visual story tellers. The whole series deal with the unreal, sci fi, monsters, and such. This is a reference guide to the sci fi/fantasy art made by others to help visualize your own creative compositions of the imaginary realms.

El libro es muy bonito y bastante grueso, abarca una gran cantidad de artistas (más de 50). Manteniéndose dentro del tema de artes oscuras, hay una interesante variedad de bocetos de estilos muy diferentes y pequeños insights en la inspiración y proceso de los artistas. Los dibujos e ilustraciones van desde retratos tétricos, pasando por criaturas monstruosas hasta toda clase de temas mórbidos. La mayoría son blanco y negro, escalas de grises, sepias o tonalidades muy oscuras de rojos, verdes y azules, manteniendo una consistente colección de lo macabro. Conocí bastantes nombres nuevos y es un gran libro para buscar inspiración. Definitivamente me interesa conseguir los libros de ciencias ficción, fantasía y criaturas.

Preciosas ilustraciones para tomar como referencia, sin ningún tipo de problema de impresión, todo se ve a la perfección. Sigue la línea de las colecciones de 3dtotal, no defrauda.

If you like dark art, you won't be disappointed with this book. Good to learn about many artist with different styles of drawings.
