Can you use different candy? Like m&m's?

Yes, the dispenser holes are big enough. They could fit Sixlets, M&Ms, Nerds Clusters. I wouldn't go as far as Peanut M&Ms though since those can be a bit bigger.

What type of batteries?

A round flat battery - it comes with one but unfortunately the battery was dead.
