How to choose a Poly Tarpaulin (Polyethylene Tarpaulin)

You need to select the right tarpaulin for your application whether you are protecting vehicle, equipment, construction, tent, and outdoor event from sun, sand, and rain damage. Poly Tarpaulins are one of the most popular tarpaulins available to consumers due to the wide range of colors, sizes, weights/strength and price.

[Construction]

Poly Tarpaulins are typically made of multiple layers with a woven mesh fabric sandwiched between two or more polyethylene sheets.

[Reference Parameter]

Tarpaulin Thickness– This is the actual thickness of the tarpaulin measured in g/m². The larger the number, the thicker the tarpaulin. Typical light weight tarpaulins found in most retail or hardware stores are about 60~100g. If you are planning a heavy duty use, such as covering a carport, consider a heavy duty tarpaulin at 150 to 200g.

Reinforcement– Tarpaulins have additional reinforcement around the perimeter of the tarpaulin to help prevent ripping and tearing.

Perimeter rope– This is a rope which has been sewn inside the hem at the edge of the tarpaulin to add reinforcement strength to the tarpaulin.
Hem– The hem is formed by folding the edge of the tarpaulin back onto the tarpaulin and then stitching the entire hemmed area.
