The badly written book
This book comes out as an extremely self-possessed type of writing done by a person who cannot write in clear, flowing style. I must admit that it was impossible to complete the book - it was so boring. Though I genuinely think that the author must have had great adventures but somehow that has not been translated properly.

Queen of the Elephants
A good read if you are a seasoned traveller in India and a fan of 'Travels on My Elephant' the cracking original which inspired this follow-up. However the book is disappointing in many ways as it seems to repeat the story of Shand's apprenticeship as a Mahoot only under new circumstances and a new teacher. Much of the mystery and adventure of the first novel could not translate into this sequel. On the plus side the prose, the plot and the writing craft unfold in a very readable way and one wonders why this author has not published more than three books.

An excellent book of you like animals, especially elephant.
Crystal clear writing, An engaging story that has Mark Shand, Parvati Barua and elephants. one can hardly ask for more. A great book for loving animals, understanding human-animal conflicts and to some extent, conservation process. A must read, along with Shand's other book- Travel on my elephant.

Wonderful elephant story
I you enjoy true animal/human stories this is one of the best. I have also read Mark Shand's other elephant book where he travels through India with his elephant Tara and a mahout and forage gatherer. This tale is just as good. Tragic that Mark died after a pavement fall. I am also looking for his other book 'Skulduggery' as it is bound to be an excellent read as he was a natural writer.

Another great book by Mark Shand
Another great book that is easy to read and highlights the battle the Asian elephants face for their species to survive. This is an old book but the problem is still exists today. This book lets you see the amazing personalities of these beautiful creatures.

Most enjoyable true story.
A true story very well written by the late Mark Shand and read by Paul Shelley,it came to an end all too quickly, even though it lasted nearly 7 hours! if you love India, its people and Elephants, its for you.If you are lucky enough to come across this rare cassette recording, buy it, you won't be disappointed. Also available as a video documentary and book....which I also highly recommended.Mark Shand set up the Elephant Family Charity before he tragically died after a fall. Please support the charity ,it helps Elephants not only in India but the world, if nothing is done to save these wonderful majestic creatures, they will become extinct in the wild in your great grandchildrens lifetime or sooner..
