My new favorite rod!
Since my love of fishing has grown, and with it the desire to catch bigger fish, I decided to buy a more "serious" rod than my beginner's supermarket rod-reel combo. I was tempted to go with one of the Ugly Stick range, which I have some experience of, but having read a bunch of reviews on Amazon, I decided to give the Perigee II a chance. I was not disappointed! Everything about the rod (and indeed the Sharky III reel I bought to accompany my new rod) spells quality. The "out of box" experience is extremely good--the rod comes well packaged so that it is totally protected during shipping. Setting the rod up was, of course extremely easy, but ultimately it's all about how well the rod performs on the water. I set mine up with 25 lb braided line and a 20 lb mono leader attached to a 3/8 jig carrying Gulp Shrimp. I went out into about 40 feet of water off the Atlantic coast of Florida and just reeled in fish and after fish (mostly Bar Jacks and Lane Snapper). The rod is very light and easy to work with in tight conditions (my boat tends to be a little cramped), but I was able to cast easily and far. The rod (despite being for "heavy" fish) is very sensitive, and I felt a great connection between my hand and what was happening 30+ ft below me. Once I hooked something, I felt very much in control of my underwater opponent (Bar Jacks are very strong fighters pound-for-pound) and confident that the rod would not let me down. This is exactly what I was looking for: a sturdy rod that I could rely on along with the sensitivity needed to feel the right rime to strike. The overall construction of the rod is terrific, including its high-quality eyelets that I know aren't going to get worn out by braided line, which is what lets most "affordable" rods down. I am looking forward to many happy days on the water with my new favorite rod.

Great, lightweight spinning rod with a Best-In-Class Lifetime Total Warranty!
Another great KastKing rod purchase that I've made. The 7ft, 2 piece spinning rod comes with 2 top sections. One is Medium and the other is Medium/Heavy. It's like getting two rods for the price of one! The finish on the rod is absolutely beautiful. By the reel seat you get nice shiny carbon fiber while the main sections are a nice matte black finish. With the Medium top on, the rod is pretty stiff; stiffer than a typical Medium rod, but does not affect the fast tip sensitivity. I like that there are arrows where the two pieces join which allow you easily line them up without having to sight through the guides to ensure the guides are lined up straight. Though the lower section is nice and thick, the rod itself is very lightweight as carbon fiber should be. Depending on the upper section you attach, be sure to follow the lure/line weight guide to ensure optimum performance experience. Extremely pleased with this purchase and can highly recommend it because it comes with a "Best-in-claass Lifetime Total Warranty"! KastKing clearly stands behind their products.

Rods are fine, hook keeper is not
I own two of these rods, the 5’6” LF and the 6’6” HF. Both are two-piece rods. I’ve caught one of my biggest bass (20”, 4lbs) on the LF and it held up well, even on the hard hook set. I mostly use this rod to throw very light lures, and it has enough flex to excel in the cast. I also used to use it to troll crank baits through the river in my kayak. I’ve hit sudden snags, muscled in catfish against the current on light line, and bent hooks out of snags and it’s held up fine, although it didn’t inspire confidence. Which is why I picked up the Heavy-fast model, which is used almost exclusively for trolling, though I might start using it to throw spinners for pile (#3s are a tough cast on a baitcaster). I’ve had it on the water once so far, still no fish, but it’s only a matter of time. This is my first heavy rod that wasn’t some bass pro catfish combo, and my initial impressions are that it’s extremely lightweight and feels nice in the hand. I have some MH baitcast rods that are twice the price but feel less nimble. I’m hyped to see how it feels when I pull in the first catch. My one complaint is the hook keeper. Holy smokes is it bad. It’s a clip instead of a loop and on the top of the rod. Somehow if I work a bait with slack line, the recoil likes getting stuck in the keeper, and I have to pull it out when I should be trying to feel the bait. This sucks since I use this rod for finesse fishing, and every time I have to take my hand off the line is a time I could miss a bite. On the heavy rod, I hooked my bait onto the keeper to set it down, and as I tightened the slack, the keeper bent up with barely any pressure. I’ve never seen this before - maybe I got a defective rod because I’ve tightened the other rod way more and the keeper hasn’t bent. I’m thinking about grinding the keepers off and just getting an aftermarket one. Anyway, these are awesome rods for the price point. I don’t think you can find something better under $50. But just keep in mind that the hook keeper might leave you frustrated.
