A bit like a chunky crayon, twist the silver bottom and up pops the colored crayon. No sharpening required and they do last a long time. Still using my other shade and that must be two months plus and that with it being used practically everyday.This shade I ordered as was thinking it a summer colour to go nicely with a light tan and orangey coloured clothing, it does and looks not a bright one but just a nice light summery shade.
