Super little film
As the credits rolled on Mr.s Brown, the story of Queen Victoria and servant John Brown played by Billy Connolly, a recommendation came up for Victoria and Abdul. I decided the fee was reasonable and accessed the film.Judi Dench plays Victoria in her later years "fat, deaf, morbidly obese and cantankerous" her own words. The story has wit and comedy as well as illustrating how this grieving woman grew to trust a Muslim Indian man servant, much to the disdain of her son Bertie, the future king and the royal hangers on. It's a truly wonderful entertaining film if you like well acted historic offerings. I truly loved it, though Mrs. Brown had the edge for me.

Good movie. Similar topic to Mrs Brown
Queen Victoria is bored and fed up of the fawning and controlling courtiers and when Abdul brings her a special coin from India and gives her friendly eye contact she sees his genuineness and befriends him , much to the fury of her courtiers who plot in every way to get rid of Abdul .. and we are given an insight into the imperialist racism and how that plays out .. the costumes and sets were good too .

Vety warm enjoyable film
Loved this film shows a very human side to Queen Victoria and her warmth to those who were true to her. It was terrible how the royal family treated Abul.. I thought Judi Dench played Queen Victoria beautifully again. The only negative is why the film makers always refer to Queen Victoria as Queen of England which she was not she was Queen of Great Britain and Empress of India. In fact Queen Victoria was very proud of her Scottish ancestry and her connections to the Royal House of Scotland the Royal Stewarts/Stuarts.

Lovely Film That is Well Worth Watching
This is an utterly delightful and charming film. It studies the relationship between Queen Victoria and Abdul, her Indian servant. She is Queen of England and Empress of India, and he gets it, but somehow doesn't. He is honest with her and she loves the fact that he is not like the sycophants she is surrounded by at court. It has beautiful imagery, opulent sets and beautiful costumes, but you never lose sight of the humanity of the principal characters. It does have some elements about "Mrs. Brown" about it, but the situations were not that different. After Brown's death, Victoria was a bit lonely, and Abdul filled his place without replacing him as John Brown for Prince Albert. I hope you enjoy this film as much as I did.

WONDERFUL VICTORIAN HISTORY
I rather enjoyed this film, clearly Dame Judi Dench knows about Victoria as she has played her before. I am not sure how much truth there is in the history but I found the film amusing, Victoria catches Abdul's eye and from there on the chemistry between them seems to build up. Th fact the he is tall, dark and hnadsome is noticed not on by the Queen but also by some of her courtiers. The friendship between the two grows throughout the film and Abdul really gets the monarch "amused", we see a new side of the monarch who reigned when Britain was the absolute world power.Victorian prejudices are shown but the film does not exaggerate them.Nice story told with humour.

Entertaining and informative
Up front: I subtracted a star because the subtitles are tiny and not on the screen long enough when some Urdu conversations occur. That detracted from an otherwise excellent film. The events are mostly true, although embellished as one would expect from Hollywood. The embellishment does not detract from the movie (for me). If you are a purist you will probably find a lot of nits to pick. If you want to learn something about historical events that give some context to the British colonialism in India this is informative. It also hints at the schism between Islam and Hindu factions in India, which would culminate about sixty years later in the "Partition". But mainly you will gain deep insights into Victoria as a person, and the Queen as a force that is not nearly as absolute as we American tend to think. One surprising fact that surfaced is the Victoria had more than a rudimentary grasp of Urdu, which is very close to Hindi when spoken, but uses a right to left script similar to Arabic. That Victoria was able to write coherent notes in that language, using that script, impresses me to no end and speaks volumes about her intellectual capacity.Others have eloquently written about the great acting and beautiful cinematography, so I will just agree and move on. If you like historical and biographical films - and especially those about Victoria in particular or the British monarchy in general - you will probably enjoy this film. I am sure that I will rewatch it a few more times to catch nuances that I missed during my first viewing. And I will continue to research what little is known about the key players, including the court, to augment my understanding. That is one of my joys of learning.
