I've had one of these for 2-3 years for hammering from my washing machine. The hammering has started again. Can these start to fail after a while?

Larger types have balloons inside which expand this relieves the back pressure(water hammer), this type is different it could have a spring and valve arrangement because of its small size, but does the same job. Its possible the internals blocked/broken.

can this be fitted to a water tank fitted with a ball valve

Sorry no idea we have its fitted to the house stop tap and still had to turn the waters pressure down . Its has helped it . We had water hammer really bad.
