Says "requires paid tv guide for dvr record", so all recording is totally disabled unless you pay?

Just received my order. Attached and it formatted USB drive. Even though the app allows me to setup to record shows, no recording was performed. Under Account Info, showed DVR is not active. After googling, HDHomeRun's web page said subscription ($35/yr) is required if want to use DVR on HDHomeRun ("not required if you are using third party DVR software/service" like Plex).

Router in garage, indoor antenna best by far away window, no ethernet ports in house, coax outlet only. Can I make this unit work?

I don't know how you'd do that without an Ethernet connection. This is designed to take "off air" programs by way of an antenna and provide them on an Ethernet connection so that you can either control them with a server (which is often acting as a DVR), or with a network direct connect to your streaming box or Smart TV. If you're running your network using Wi-Fi for streaming, and you have an Ethernet connection in your garage on your router, you could plug it in there. Long coax runs from an antenna can exhibit loss, so it's difficult to assess how well that would work since I'm not actually there, I can't comment. If you can get good TV signals off coax in the garage, then it should be able to work through your router.
