old book refound
Paddle to the sea is a book I really liked as a child in the 1950s and 60s. it is a simple story of a Native Canadian who carves a small figurine and sends it off with the hope/intention that it will find it's way to the open ocean through the waterways of Canada/North America. It's written simply and tells of this journey and how the lad finally finds that it went all across to France. Having always loved looking at maps, this story which charted the places visited by the figurine along the way was fascinating to me. I make no apology for saying that when I read it again for the first time in nearly 50 years, I still find it captivating. A very easy, satisfying read. It won't be 50 years until I read it again!

For children and adults alike
An existential story full of adventure , love, and triumph. If you’ve never read it - no matter your age - do so now.

First read it in the 1940's
I was delighted to find this book again as my mother used to read me the story in the 1940's when it was first published. It is a wonderful story - the fact that I remembered the story for just under 70 years must say something about the quality of the story and the excellent illustrations. I would unreservedly recommend it to you.

Lovely book
This was a gift to a 3-year-old great-niece. My husband had chosen it (he's great at choosing books that are interesting and educational! and that "stretch" a child's mind. I gave it a 5-star rating based on his assessment of the book.

Beautifully written books.
See my review on "Seabird ". Any book written by Holling Clancy Holling is a "keeper", a treasure never to be forgotten, as in my case, from 65 years ago. All of his books make an exceptionally good read for any bright, inquisitive youngster. Also try Minn of the Mississippi and Tree in the Trail. Absolute gems.

Geography made Fun
If I'd had this book back when it was published, I think my geography marks at school would have been much higher. The story is fun, the drawings are great to remember the shapes of all the Great Lakes and it's really a stroll down memory lane (as a Canadian living in Switzerland). Thank you for this book! As soon as my grandchildren are old enough, I'll be reading it to them so they can honor their Canadian roots.

Mi sono innamorato di questo libro dopo aver visto una puntata di "Un Medico tra gli Orsi". E' la favola di Pagaia Veloce, un bambino indiano che vorrebbe esplorare il mondo. Per il bambino curioso che è in tutti noi...

This is a book I remember reading as a child, again as a young adult, repeatedly with our children when they were small – and now as a Grandpa with my own store, something I treasure and want to see in the personal library of every family. Almost too lengthy for the genre in which it seems it should fit, it in fact creates a genre all its own. The wealth of research behind it is priceless. The artistry is astonishing. The geography it explores gives SO MUCH INSIGHT into the water-shed of the Great Lakes with the competing influences of water currents, wind, logging and sawmills. The book is a treasure, and for Homeschool Families especially, offers so much educational value in a delightful way. It is one of those timeless books where the illustrations and the text together tell a story that hundreds of hours of in-depth research could not duplicate. It is exceptionally rare for a book to teach so much, but also to be fun to view and to read. Five stars is not adequate. Published in 1941 – older by quite a bit even than this old Grandpa, it is still a treasure.

I read this beautiful book when I was a young child. It filled my head with thoughts of adventure. I have spent much of my adult life travelling the world and meeting interesting people. Thank you.
