Great book
This book is very well detailed, easy to understand and easy to follow. The CD was recorded using different people ( teachers ) from different parts of the world where Chinese is spoken. You will become acquainted with almost all the accents in the Chinese language. This book can be used in the classroom or at home for the self taught students. The first step to learning a language is the alphabet and its pronunciation, this book will teach you that and more. You will learn proper pronunciation with this book. Now, it is up to you to be motivated and study everyday. After you're through with the pronunciation, you can take it further with reading and writing.Thank you for reading, and don't give up, learning is forever.

A good resource for self-study
I have taken several online courses on Chinese characters, and I was initially put off by the exclusive use of pinyin in this book. I felt disoriented without having any characters to look at. However, Professor Kubler offers a persuasive explanation for his dual-track approach (speaking and listening in this book, reading and writing in another book), and other Chinese language teachers have supported it (for example, see the favorable review of an earlier version in the October 2015 issue of the Journal of the Chinese Language Teachers Association). And there are offsetting strengths that are apparent even in the introductory sections.Anyone who is compiling a list of Unnecessarily Complicated Things should look at the Centigrade-Fahrenheit conversion formulas on page 333. If this were an algebra textbook, those formulas would be in a problem set asking for simplification.

Came early & it was in very good condition!
I had bought it used through these sellers and I was surprised by the very good condition. Some slight dirt markings and sticker remaining but the text itself was basically mint! Excited to use it to learn.

Great Refresher
I am relearning Chinese after a 20 year hiatus. This book is very informative and insightful. So many things I have learned from this text I never learned in the four years I studied Chinese at the University of Michigan. I'm talking simple stuff, cultural stuff like shaking hands. Not once did my professors ever discuss it. So far, I like this book as it is refreshing my memory. It's interesting and the audio is superb. I will keep you informed as I progress.

Exactly the book I needed!
Came exactly as described, and for a much cheaper price compared to buying new. Couldn't be happier!

No audio!
I didn't buy this used and so assumed that there would be audio/video included. At least that's what the description said.Later edit: the description (you have to hunt for it) says that audio/video are accessible on the publisher's website! I'm cool with this now.
