The Best Of Chuck Berry [CD]

I have waited a long time
When I was a kid and it was record stores in white neighborhoods you couldn't find Chuck Berry beyond a 45 or finally the live album which was all about My Ding-a-ling. This is a truly wonderful collection of hits. It catches the precision, poetry, tight lyrics done with a sense of perfection, and guitar chops that said all that needed to be said with minimum flash. Rock 'n' Roll can never thank Chuck Berry enough.

It's all Berry similar!
I brought this as an addition to my rock n' roll collection, but I am sure that this is the worst. Among my collection I have Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and the great Eddie Cochran. Unlike Chuck Berry, Eddie was actually living the teenage angst lifestyle and was practicing what he preached. Chuck Berry was merely looking back at memories and pretending he was there, and the result is clearly unrelative to an Eddie Cochran fan.Another problem with his songs is that nearly all of them sound the same. There's 3 or 4 songs in a row in the latter part of the album that have the same intro! Yes, Chuck Berry was important to popular music at the time and he has some good songs. These are; Johnny B Goode, my fav Berry song, Roll over Beethoven, Sweet little sixteen, which the beach boys elaborated on with Surfin' USA - their best song, Brown eyed handsome man - which Buudy Holly covered, but wasn't as good and Rock & roll music - which the beach boys covered. I think the beach boys version is just as good as Berry's, if not better. One song that really surprised me was the very silly My ding-a-ling. I read in the booklet that this topped the charts in both the US and the UK. That's hard to believe. The track that's included is a live song, where the audience are singing 'I want you to play with my ding-a-ling!', which is really silly (but funny!). It's funny when he tells the ones who 'will not sing' to 'stop playing with your ding-a-ling-a-ling!!'.Moreover, I thought the album was quite plain. As a Best of, I was expecting a great sound and as this is the best that he has done, he doesn't deserve to lick the kicks of Eddie, let alone look at Elvis! I know that he wrote all his material and some of it is catchy, but I don't think that this album is even worth buying! Maybe you could chuck it on as background music, but it's definitely not worth sitting down to listen to. So do yourselves a favour and buy some Buddy Holly or certainly the best of from Eddie Cochran - now that's rock n roll!! I gave this album 3 stars a while ago, but it actually deserves 2.

Essential Berry
If you are looking for a good collection of Chuck Berry material, look no further. Everyone has their own favourites and may identify one or two omissions but generally all the key songs are to be found on this CD which comes at a very reasonable price. The one annoying track which I wish they'd left out or replaced with something else is "My Ding-a-Ling". This is somewhat later than the other material on here and does not fit in at all well with the rest of the collection but it was Berry's only UK number 1 single, so I guess the compilers felt obliged to include it.

hail hail rock and roll
This is another cd i ordered for my clients, along with Buddy Holly (see my review for that one, and you will understand) well Chuck went down just as well with them too. my only problem is that the whole album is so short due to the length of the songs in those days, averaging 2 minutes. saying that though, still brilliant. and my dementia clients loved the songs. one sat by the cd player singing along and jiving to it. music certainly makes a difference to their lives, as i have said in my Buddy Holly review, gone are the days of sitting in front of a tv on full volume, slowly going mad. it brings a positive change of mood to them all. well it does when i'm on duty, it's the first thing i put on when i go in. i love Chuck myself, so everybody's happy.
