Stevie Ray Vaughan: Live At The El Mocambo [DVD]

The Best of the Best
I remember watching a rock programme on British TV some years back in which they compiled a list of the ten-best rock guitarists of all time. Stevie Ray wasn't even on there. I guess hardly anyone in Britain had heard of him. Predictably, Clapton came second and Jimi Hendrix first. Soon after this I discovered SRV when an American friend gave me a Couldn't Stand The Weather CD. After that I bought a couple of live CDs having read on the internet about his stunning live performances. What can I say? Magic? Genius? Words can't capture it. I'd never heard anything like it before. I don't think music had ever moved me to tears before. It soon became quite obvious to me that Stevie Ray should have been at the top of that list, above even the great Hendrix. If you find this hard to believe, compare live performances of Hendrix, Clapton and SRV playing Voodoo Chile (at different times of course!). Hendrix is incredible and deserves to be considered one of the best ever, but SRV somehow reaches an even higher level. So let that list stand, with Hendrix at the top. But that's the second division. Above them we have Stevie Ray Vaughan, in a league all by himself. He could sing too. They used to say that Clapton was God. What that makes Stevie Ray I don't know. Well I do know: Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best rock and blues guitarist that ever lived, and always will be. Live At The El Mocambo captures him on top form in 1983. The best of the best. Prepare to be moved.

A lasting legacy of the finest guitarist of a generation
Wow! 30 years on and STILL sounds fresh and looks stunning.Captured at an intimate setting, a long way from Texas, Stevie, Tommy & Chris let rip from the word go, and don't let up.Personally, I'd love to have seen more camera shots of his hands playing, but that's personal preference. There is a poignant interview with Tommy & Chris as a bonus feature recorded 9 years after Stevies untimely death, and they STILL look dazed and haunted from his passing. My only slight criticism from this fantastic release are the omission of several songs that WERE played and recorded but don't appear on this updated DVD.You'll Be Mine and Little Wing appear on the official release of the CD from the Complete Epic Recordings but don't appear visually which is a huge pity.Still, embrace this polished up DVD, and just feel the intensity of the playing from a true master yet to scratch the surface of his potential

THE GREATEST!
If you're a blues fan, or fan of great musical talent, you must see this performance. It is simply one of the most powerful displays of ability I've ever seen, band is great from start to finish, and many of the songs will quickly become favorites. SRV didn't write all the songs in here, but mercy me, he PLAYS them the way they should be played. His covers should rightly be seen as enhancements and stand-alones from the originals.

IMPERDIBILE..
