What cover is compatible with this changing pad?

I never used a cover. The pad itself made for easy clean up if there was a messy diaper. My baby was small during the summer months. If your concerned about the pad being cold for your baby maybe use a receiving blanket while you are changing your baby.

Do you have to purchase some sort of protector for it?

Nope, you don't have to as its plastic covered. We chose to because it can be cool to touch, and I liked the decorative options of covers, but you can definitely just use it as is.

Is this product indeed non-skid? Numerous reviews say otherwise.

No, It's junk, period. I went to BuyBuy Baby and bought a Colgate brand and it's thick, reliable, sturdy and wonderful. This thing is exactly as described by others, cardboard crap, don't buy it.
