Castle: A History of the Buildings that Shaped Medieval Britain

A great value.book.
This is a book I would highly recommend for anyone interested in Medieval England when so many castles were built and destroyed. We still have the legacy of those amazing buildings still standing for us to admire. There are other books on this.subject some of which I have read but this surpasses them all. So much research. Marc Morris never lets you down.

Highly Recommended!
I bought this book without any prior knowledge, just chose it on Amazon for some reason. It turned out to be a very engaging and informative read. Marc Morris is an excellent writer, the topic of castle history can be very boring, but he manages to make it exciting, fascinating and entertaining! He suggests several criteria to look for while evaluating castles and suggests the structure into which to classify your knowledge about castles. He chooses one particular example of a "typical" castle for each epoch and covers its history in great detail while providing info about other castle of the period.I am in love with this book and I can't recommend it enough to anyone who wants to learn about British castles.

A great book
I first came across this work while helping my children with a school project on castles. I probably enjoyed the project more than they did thanks in no small part to Mr Morris's book.'Castles' is informative and easy to read and for anyone visiting the featured buildings it makes a wonderful companion.

Passionate but not a pageturner
I am a little disappointed by this book and it isn't gripping me as much as Morris' other books on medieval history. It's written in a very populist way but more so than his other books, which benefit from being very scholarly. This book feels a bit like a long blog or written to tap into a quick win market. Perhaps I'm being harsh as its still very readable, and there are so many castles that he has no choice but to condense, but nevertheless it's not a pageturner (I may just have maxed out on my medieval history appetite!)

Best Book on Castles I've Read
Marc Morris is a first rate historian of medieval English history. This book will acquaint you with their origin and development while placing everything in a precise historical context. It is focused on England and does not address the castles on the European continent except in passing. Morris provides the perfect amount of detail in a clear way. The book should be read by anyone with an interest in castles and will greatly enhance any visit to English castles. It is the rare book that is suitable for general readers and enlightening for those with extensive knowledge. Highly recommended.
