Great story but language a little tough for 5th grade
The language is a little difficult so it was a bit tough for my 5th grade son even though he's reading at 8.5 grade level. It's not just the vocab but the metaphoric style which children's may not be able to catch on with their lack of real world experience. But son learned new things as I read with him. Loved the story!

another exciting story of a boy and his dog
Jim Kjelgarrd writes exciting outdoor adventures for young people. The heroes are always very independent and self-sufficient. Alan and his father ran a hunting lodge until his father was sent to prison for a fight with an obnoxious client. Alan holds down the fort while his father is gone. There is a feud with a clan of nasty neighbors, who have cut off the wildlife runway that brought business to the hunting camp. What Alan has to go through at the hands of his father's enemies is really upsetting. I find the books where the young hero has to fight bears less disturbing than the ones where human enemies try to ruin the heroes life. It's too much like real life! Alan, who has no hunting dog, rescues a great retriever who has been shot. It takes work to win the dog's trust, but like all of Kjelgaard's heroes, Alan proves worthy. Adding to the conflict is that the dog is an outlaw, accused of being rabid and attacking his owner. Then Alan finds himself an outlaw too! Loads of suspense and adventure, and lots of lessons about life. It's not an easy world out there, but by being a straight shooter and stoic, Alan and Stormy tough it out!

I fell in love with this author years ago when I was a teen and have read EVERY book within the Big Red series and many more of his work as well. I have always loved this story more than the others and truly do not know the reason why but that's not that important. This man is truly a gem within the writing world and to give you an idea of how much I loved this book ... I named my new kitten - all black - Stormy after having gotten the book and been struggling with a name for him.

Entertaining
I’m kinda reliving my younger days. I read Jim Kjelgaard’s books when I was in my early teens, and I’m enjoying them just as much or more now that I’m approaching 70.

Kjelgaard's animals & nature
Jim was a wonderful writer and I have been carried away by each of his novels, this one included. In each is a sense of integrity, duty, and laughter, and a great respect for Nature and for dogs. It is sad we lost him when we did, but his books are ageless and will touch many generations. Age 8 and up. ( I was 55 when I found him)

Great classic book for boys
When your 10-year-old boy says, "I don't know what to read next," introduce him to the Jim Kjelgaard books about dogs. There are many. My husband read them as a boy and now our boys are reading them. They are clean (where sometimes Gary Paulsen books have some mild language) and also exciting.
