Sullivan Stapleton, Rodrigo Santoro and Eva Green star in this action film based on Frank Miller's graphic novel 'Xerxes' and set before, during and after the events of '300' (2006). In 480 BC, Athenian General Themistocles (Stapleton) leads the Greek Army in a war against the invasion of King Xerxes I (Santoro), naval commander Artemisia (Green) and their Persian forces. Themistocles allies with the Spartans but they are still outnumbered by Xerxes' men. Who will be victorious? The film was co-written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad and also stars Lena Headey, Jack O'Connell and Hans Matheson.

Stylish and better than expected
This film was much better than i expected it to be. I am a fan of 300 and felt that as a self contained brutal action film it had enough stylish visuals to be very entertaining, however i had a lot less hopes for this movie.I was totally wrong. Again this film looks amazing, and you can see where Zach Snyders visual techniques were adapted for it. The story is taken from the Frank Miller graphic novel 'Xerxes' and fills in details of the whole Persian - Greek war, so whilst the events in this film are taking place the entirety of 300 occurs off screen.Eva Green is superb in her role, and is one of my favourite actresses, the rest of the cast do good work around her and keep things moving along nicely. The film never feels too slow, and at about 100 minutes it does not outstay it's welcome.I would recommend this to any fan of 300 as well as someone who wants a good action movie for an evening in.

300: Rise of an Empire - Brilliant fighting scenes
Wasn't sure about this but decided to take the plunge. I thought this film to be superior to the first 300. We both enjoyed it very much even though there was a lot of gore, but that would have been the case way back then anyway. There would be a huge amount of gore, so it was entirely in keeping. The fight scenes were excellent and very plausible and well done. The story was good and the actors were brill too. I especially liked Eva Green in this because she gave as much as she got, with interest. You knew where she was coming from after what had happened to her and her family. For the price, I think it was good for a night in, although possibly not so much for the ladies, even though I, as a lady, enjoyed it. One strange thing was that the antagonists on the sea were all sailing in ships without sides, like sailing on big ship like planks. Weird.

Not a patch on 300
Not a patch on 300, no great one-liners, strange sea battles and a lack of Spartan warriors. The Athenians are portrayed in this film as excellent warriors with a mighty, skilled navy - this was not the case, they were actually mostly merchants. There is no way that the navy could destroy countless Persian ships by ramming them, when they are not full-time seamen. Ships ram through the enemy like a hot knife through butter...visually it may look good, but I like more realism.

Great film.
Absolutely brilliant! If you loved the first film you cannot fail but love this also & although, maybe, not quite as good as the original, I wonder if that's just down to the fact that having seen the first, the dark, semi-gothic/steampunk tone of the film is not such a novelty as it was with the original? It was good to catch up with some "old friends" in this sequel & see what they've all been up to & the story line stands up well in comparison to 300. I shall definitely be watching this again.

Only gripe I have is the lack of colour it seemed to be in something like cepeatone which in my opinion is somewhat dull
Watching this piece of brilliance in Blu Ray made such a difference, stunning sharpness and special effects allowed you transport yourself into the World of Fantasy that this film takes us to. Only gripe I have is the lack of colour it seemed to be in something like cepeatone which in my opinion is somewhat dull. Otherwise I enjoyed this film based on the true story about Persian desire to expand their Empire into Europevia what is now Greece and the Heroic efforts of the 300 Spartans who denied them such.

Just as good as 300 in my opinion.
I really liked the first and thought I'd give the second a go. I'm not sure why others have found it so bad, if you liked the first one I think you'll like Rise Of An Empire. Personally I found it was in the same vein 300 and tells the story of Themistocles from a time before 300 to within and after the time of 300.
