Merry, heart-warming, clever, funny, charming and absolutely adorable - one of best romantic comedies EVER!
I always LOVED this film, which you can see and enjoy together with your better half - and the magic of "While you were sleeping" works as well on one of the first dates, as near the silver wedding anniversary...This is the story of a lonely shy girl named Lucy (Sandra Bullock) whose life is defined by a monotonous dead end job and a completely hopeless crush on a handsome wealthy man (Peter Gallegher) she meets every day, but who never looked at her, not even once... Then one day her whole world is overwhelmed by a kind of powerful (albeit non-lethal) tsunami - and she will be carried by this gentle but irresistible wave in a direction she would never have suspected... I will say no more here about the story. The operative words when describing this film are "warm", "gentle" and "adorable". There is absolutely nothing dark in it, even if at one moment appears a furious shrew (Ally Walker, grandiose) - but even she is somehow funny rather than bad... There is also a comatose patient, a freak incident involving a crayon, some furniture breaking (mostly accidental), pants ripping (completely accidental) and of course there is Joe Fusco Jr (Michael Rispoli, fantastic) whose very existence on this planet may seem to be an aggression against the rest of humanity - but all of this just gives the occasion for more humour.Humour in this film is of best quality, with absolutely NO strong language, but with some pretty good one liners and verbal fencing. And then there is of course THE scene with the Callaghan family eating dinner together and having a conversation... Words can hardly describe this scene but I will always consider this as a great injustice that nobody was nominated to the Oscars for it...This film, together with "Speed", was the beginning of Sandra Bullock's great career. Peter Boyle (greatly regretted) and Bill Pullman, who play respectively Ox Callaghan and Jack Callaghan (his second son), are two other pillars of this film.Bottom line, this is an ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE thing, which can be watched as many times as you want (with my wife we saw it no less than seven times - may be more). A film to buy and see absolutely! Enjoy!

Great one to watch with the romantics in your family around Christmas
I've looked at both the positive and negative reviews on here and I'll say this, perhaps its not best film ever but you're missing the point, it's just a sweet little Christmas. If you look at it like that and compare it to the other christmas romances on Netflix and Hallmark, this is to me one of the best Christmas romance films, no competition. This is more subtle than the vast array of tacky Hallmark and Netflix romances out there. Yes it is 'very 90s' in that if you've seen Sandra Bullock in another romance she gives a similar adorable down to earth performance and the soundtrack and clothes are very reminiscent of that era. However I consider this a gem as now seems so rare to find (non-disney) films that you can watch with the rest of your family without cringing at dated conversations or graphic nudity/language.It's also a great one to watch if you are feeling a bit lonely and sentimental. The couple in it are charming, I found the need for family at Christmas adorable and I could forgive the rushed happily ever after ending because it's a sweet gentle Christmas film. Just allow yourself to enjoy it and don't take it too seriously!

At Last! A Watchable Blu-ray of a Favorite Film!
I have loved this film for years, but for some reason it has never been released on Blu-ray in the US, so I have been stuck with an old DVD whose mediocre image is very apparent on my big screen TV. Because of that, I was forced to look for the Blu-ray from other countries, and until now, the experience has been a bad one, with so-called Blu-ray discs that were no better than my DVD (beware especially of Italian Blu-rays). I approached the new Australian Blu-ray with fear and trepidation, especially since I couldn't judge the quality sight unseen, would have to pay international shipping and couldn't viably return it if I were disappointed, but I took the plunge. This time, it finally paid off. This Australian Blu-ray is actually an upgrade from the original DVD, and looks fine on my 80" TV screen. If you are an obsessed American fan like me, the one drawback is that you must have a multi-region player to see this disc (I do), as it is made for a different Blu-ray area than the U.S. The disc is also "no frills," with only the theatrical trailer as a bonus feature (like the original DVD); there is an interesting choice of subtitles and dubbed languages, however, so you could always switch the audio over for a new experience. I hope there will be an American release with all the special feature trimmings someday, but until that happens, the Australian release is the best thing out there.

My favourite Rom-com, but wobbly
While You Were Sleeping is the ultimate feel-good film: amusing, touching, romantic, wonderfully acted, with a bit of American Christmas thrown in for good measure. The problem with this (new) DVD is that it’s slightly wobbly in places. Perhaps that’s because it offers French & Italian, too - I don’t know. It might have been better from another supplier, not Amazon EU, but UK.
