Great reissue of TBM original mini first album and previously unissued singles. The remastering overdubs the instrumentation over Chibis voice yet still worth having for the true fan out there.

This is definitely not just a quick digital release of a bunch of old, dusty 4-track tapes. Those of us who have heard the original demos can immediately notice the work that went into remixing, remastering and polishing those songs for this release. There is great new material on the album, too, providing an overall pleasant experience for fans and newbies alike.

The album is definitely a throwback to early Birthday Massacre. It is great to hear some of the earlier versions of their popular songs as well as a few unreleased songs. I would recommend this album to fans of the band and of course anyone else who would like something different to listen to.

Great album. Many of the new tracks are spectacular. Known tracks have a special and different feel. Definitely worth picking up for new and established fans alike.

Has a different sound but that is expected since the songs are part of the band's early history. I love it though.

If you have their previous material this album or whatever you want to call it is not necessary. It's nothing more than a rehash of previously recorded material done in a poorer quality than the original recording. It has for unreleased tracks but who cares the new album is coming out this year. I regret buying this.

Imagica is the original name that the band The Birthday Massacre (TBM) had chosen way back in the late 1990s. Due to some other band with a similar name (who is apparently so lame that they are no longer around), TBM had to change their name after releasing two demos as Imagica (simply called Demo 1 and Demo 2). This release contains Demo 1 with some extra content, with all of the songs remastered, and in most cases, with new production added or replacing the original parts. The latter two points are the only reason I gave this four out of five stars -- I would have preferred a straight remaster and release. I say that because I've been listening to low-quality MP3s of Demo 1 for over 10 years. But I have fond memories of those original versions of the Demo 1 songs...Having said that, there are a few songs that do not seem to have any additional production or alterations made to them. Thankfully my #1 favorite song of TBM's, "Remember Me," is one of those unaltered songs on this release. I will always love this demo version of "Remember Me" over the Walking With Strangers version. There is such a sweet sadness to Chibi's vocals in this demo version, perfectly complemented by the somewhat sparse yet very atmospheric instrumentation.The other unaltered songs are "The Birthday Massacre" and "Night Time," the latter having eight kick drum beats cut from the beginning. "Queen of Hearts" is almost the entire original song, with only a few slight changes that are probably unnoticeable to anyone casually comparing the original to this release.From the four unreleased songs, the demo of "Play Dead" and the Madonna cover of "Open Your Heart" are my favorites. I think some of these four songs have newly-recorded vocals, as Chibi sounds more like she does on the newer releases by TBM. The only omission gravely missed from this release (such a perfect opportunity!) is TBM's cover of "The Neverending Story," which has also floated around as a low-quality MP3 for years. I believe that cover song was also recorded very early in the band's history, but was never officially released on an album or EP, demo or otherwise.Imagica Demo 2 is basically a few of the songs from the band's next release, the album Nothing and Nowhere. The Demo 2 songs do not have cross-fading or the "bridging" sound effects, but otherwise sound the same as the N&N album versions. Demo 2 does have a short instrumental demo of "To Die For" at the end, which I would have loved to have heard on this release. Maybe someday TBM will release a remastered Demo 2??I highly recommend this release if you're a fan of The Birthday Massacre. This was a very welcome gesture by the band as a "thank you" to their fans, and I appreciate it! Thank you TBM -- keep at it! (And indeed they are, with the amazing new album Under Your Spell coming this June!)

Bought this for my fiancé and she loves it. I've heard most of their songs on long car journeys and I have to admit in becoming a fan.The demos are very good in this album, I even had to ask the future Mrs "is this Birthday Massacre?" as some tracks I couldn't work out if it was or not.Great album and another for the collection although some people may not wanna pay full price for a best of/early demos cd.

Interesting to hear demo versions of the songs. Wish they would try extending some of the tracks instead of keeping to the 3 or 4 minute format.

Eines vorweg: Es handelt sich hier nicht direkt um ein "brandneues" Album von Tbm, sondern vielmehr um eine Zusammenstellung von neu vertonten Versionen alter, zum Teil unveröffentlichter Songs bzw. auch um Demoversionen von schon bekannten Liedern der Band.Meine Freude war schon riesengroß, als die Trackliste veröffentlicht wurde. Denn aus dieser konnte ich entnehmen, dass unter anderem "Night Time" und "Nothing and Nowhere" enthalten waren, 2 Songs, die ich bisher nur von Youtube kannte und von denen ich es mir schon sehr lange mal gewünscht hatte, dass diese auf einem Album veröffentlicht werden würden.Aber auch auf andere Titel von denen ich vorher noch nie gehört hatte wie z.B "Dead" oder "From out of Nowhere" war ich extrem gespant.Ich werde nun im einzelnen nur ausführlich auf jene Tracks eingehen, die mir besonders gut gefallen haben oder die mir einfach aufgefallen sind.Aaaaalso.....beginnen wir mitRemember Me:Das ist der einzige schon bekannte Song auf dem Album, bei dem sagen kann, dass er mir sogar fast noch besser gefällt wie die neue ( walking with strangers) Version. Zwar liegen hier die Gitarren etwas mehr im Hintergrund, aber es ist Chibis Stimme, die mich hier irgendwie mehr berührt. Sie hört sich hier so unglaublich jung und....irgendwie so "verloren " an. Wie ein kleines Mädchen, dass sich in einem finsteren Zauberwald verirrt hat ;) Auch wird der Refrain des Songs deutlich öfters wiederholt als in der neueren Version, was mir ebenfalls sehr gut gefallen hat. Im letzten Drittel wird das Lied plötzlich sogar ein wenig "hart" ( von den Gitarren her).Dieser Überraschungseffekt fehlt in der WwS Version, da bleibt das Lied immer "sanft". Ein weiterer Grund warum die Imagica Version bei mir deutlich die Nase vorn hat ;)Nothing and Nowhere:Dies ist einer jener Titel, den ich schon von Youtube kannte und mir schon immer sehr gut gefallen hat.Ich muss auch wirklich sagen, dass dieser Song meiner Meinung nach am gelungendsten neu vertont wurde. Es hört sich hier auf Cd einfach noch viiiiiiiiel besser an als auf Youtube, und es wurde sogar nach der Brigde ein komplett neuer Synthie Part eingefügt, den ich von der alten Version nicht kannte.Der Refrain des Liedes ist einfach wunderschön und geht sofort ins Ohr. Niemals würde ich glauben, dass das Thema hier eigentlich ein sehr düsteres ist, es geht wahrscheinlich um den Slenderman /Boogieman oder was auch immer, aber jeder interpretiert den Text vielleicht anders :)Night Time:Ein weiterer Titel dessen "staubigere" Version man bisher nur in Youtube anhören konnte.Um es kurz zu machen : Es ist einer der besten Synthie Pop bzw. Wave Songs den ich kenne. Strophen super, Refrain super, Instrumentalisierung super, Stimme passt wunderbar zu dem Rest. Night Time ist auch der tanzbarste Song des ganzen Albums, aber trotzdem gleichzeitig sehr verträumt und atmosphärisch. Toll !Dead:Der mit Abstand untypischste Song von Tbm überhaupt. Ich würde ihn eher in die Rubrik "Psycho Punk" oder ähnliches einordnen. Auch Chibis Stimme hört sich hier komplett anders an als auf dem Rest des Albums. "Dead" ist auch das einzige Lied auf "Imagica", dass ich wirklich als richtig "hart" bezeichnen würde ;) Es hört sich jedenfalls mega toll an und gehört auch zu meinem Lieblingssongs des Albums.So, nun komme ich zu einem Titel der mir leider nicht so gefallen hat.The Birthday Massacre:Hierbei handelt es sich um die frühere Version von "Happy Birthday" vom Violet Album. Dies ist meiner Meinung nach der am schlechteste remasterte Song. Zwar wurde das Flüstern in der Strophe sehr deutlich in den Vordergrund gehoben, aber Chibis Stimme im Refrain ist so leise im Hintergrund, dass man sie fast gar nicht versteht. Auch hat der Song leider nicht das Charisma und die Ausstrahlung der neueren Version.Aber es ist wirklich der einzige Titel auf dem Album, von dem ich etwas enttäuscht war, von daher ist es zu verschmerzen :))Bei dem Rest des Albums handelt es sich um die allesamt recht gelungenen Frühversionen von "Over", "Under the Stairs", und "Play Dead", sowie dem atmospährischen und leicht düsteren "Queen of Hearts", dem süssen Madonna Cover "Open your Heart", und dem wavigen powervollen "From out of Nowhere".Was ich noch anmerken wollte:Der Stil vom gesamten Album ist etwas anders gehalten als die neueren Platten. Die Musik ist viel weniger Gitarren lastig, und weniger hart.Der Sound wird noch mehr von Syntheziern bestimmt als auf allen anderen Alben. Auch Chibis Stimme klingt hier etwas anders, noch nicht ganz so ausgereift, vielleicht etwas kindlicher, naiver, aber trotzdem sehr schön. Gerade dadurch kommt die " kleines Mädchen hat sich im düsteren Wald verlaufen" Atmosphäre wunderbar hervor ;)Wen diese Änderung gegenüber den anderen Platten, sowe die Tatsache dass auch frühe Demoversionen neuerer Songs enthalten sind nicht abschrecken, dem würde ich dieses Album sehr empfehlen !

I would have given the lp a higher star but on the B side i have some Pop's & Tick's. I'm going to give Rarewaves 5 Star's I have bought quite a few records from them and never had any problems with their Service. 👍
