A Very British Christmas
This is made by film Yorkshire - mainly filmed in Yorkshire pretending to be other parts of the country. Wetherby town center is clearly used for one of the scenes. The only bit that bugs me in the film is that they call him the American 'Santa' rather than the British 'Father Christmas' - but that's just meThe story is that a dad, Steve Anderson, recently released from jail rebonds with his son by helping Santa who has accidentally crashed, lost his reindeer and gets caught breaking and entering and is held on remand in the same prison where Steve Anderson has just finished serving time for his roll as a get away driver.Rafe Spall is a great actor and is perfectly cast as Steve who is trying to get his life back on track, including proving his love for his son. Stephen Graham (of This is England fame) plays the barber - soft on the inside, hard in the outside and there are a whole group of menacing criminals which ofset Jim Broadbent as Santa in a beautiful comic way. And of course Warwick Davies has a small roll in it as Sally (Sally Gunnell - Tunnel), a man also desperate for a jailbreak.Steve's son Tom lives with his mum and stepdad who are the sensible ones, chuck in an incompitant policeman and a scary probation officer and you end up with one almighty car chase! The film ends as you would expect but there is a beautiful moment when the blended family (Mum, Dada, Stepdad and Tom) come together and you get that warm tingly feeling of Christmas joy

Get Get Santa and Have a Very Pleasant 100 Minutes of Entertainment
I don’t usually like family friendly films but gave this one a go because the trailer looked good and because generally Jim Broadbent is a sort of seal of quality. The plot of having to save Christmas is not new but this film takes it into prison. Matt King seems like odd casting as a policeman (only because I’m a huge Peep Show fan) and then doesn’t when he turns out to be a bent cop who will take bribes. Jim Broadbent is wonderful as Santa. In fact there isn’t a single weak member of the cast. It’s a beautiful film to watch and there are scenes which remind me of both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Nightmare Before Christmas. It has a couple of original touches to add to the Santa legend which involve a squirrel and how letters get to Santa. There are lovely scenes over London and a little clip of “Porridge”. The family friendliness isn’t overdone and the plot is tidy.
