A great introduction to all things porky
I have every one of the River Cottage Handbooks, and this is of the same high standard. The format works well and it is a good starting point for those who would consider keeping porkers. It is not the definitive book on pig husbandry, but is sufficiently well set out to give a sound idea how to start, what breeds to choose and how to ease the stress of taking ones charges to slaughter. Preserving the meat and using every part is set out in sections, with recipes to round of the process. A beautifully presented little handbook - looks lovely with the other 13.

Just skimmed through and this book looks as good as the other river cottage books I have read. These people really whant you to understand the subject and do it in a way which lets you pick out the pieces which most interest you now and easy to find the detail when you need it. Good photos too.

Good foundation book
The first book I have purchased in the series, and was very impressed, good all round book, and very much a foundation book, I would recommend getting this book first before any other pig book as it does give good understanding, then once you start your pigs, look at getting a more detail book on pig health etc.

Packed full of useful information from choosing and keeping pigs all the way to the slaughter house. Clear photographs to explain butchery and resulting cuts followed by an array of usable recipes. It was a great pleasure to read.

Excellent book - meets expectations - if you don't keep pigs will want to after reading however I'm still struggling with eating the ones you know. Recipes look great - yet to try. Dream about self sufficiency ? then buy this book - add to your dreams or turn into reality with help from the book.Wendy
