Inspector George Gently: Complete Series One To Eight [DVD]

Only Inspector Morse is better.
I've asked for this box set for Christmas having watched all 8 series on television and 7 series on DVD.I have some favourite episodes that I've watched several times more. The pilot episode, Gently go man, and Gently in the night from series 2. There is something very satisfying when a villain you know is bang to rights guilty has an appointment with the hangman.Did anyone else notice an error in the very last episode? Bacchus asks for a record of all calls made from a payphone. The series is supposed to be set in the 60's and 70's, and back then all dialled calls were merely recorded as metered units. Only Operator controlled calls were recorded.Only Inspector Morse is better, but that being a much older series the picture quality is sometimes worse than with George Gently.

Lovely everything the enthusiast needs
Just the job for a winter weekend or holiday period. Get stocked up, well prepared, switch on - what more could you want? This bumper pack box set does include all the favourite episodes shown over recent years. The details on the reverse are accurate and what we particularly enjoy about this series is the actors' classic and outstanding performances - plus an outstandingly honest portrayal of life in the North East of England. Great skill has been used with details and dating of these, from clothing to cars, housing to mannerisms and figures of speech that would have been heard at that time. We found this series far more faithful to detail than its counterparts, and that is what makes a complete series worth following.

I guess all good things DO come to an end...
Eight seasons is a nice run, but I think I would've liked a much longer run for George Gently. The acting, sets, characters, soundtrack - the whole kit and kaboodle - worked on this series.

Top class period drama
Martin Shaw on top form as a mature actor fantastic period detail the first couple of series filmed in Ireland pretending to be Newcastle England which works very well overall a great way to spend 90 min per episode

One DVD was scratched and would not play
This is an excellent TV series. However, the reason for only 3 stars is that one of the DVDs in my set was scratched and would not play (series 2). I decided to purchase this by downloading it from Amazon Prime but, of course, I had to pay extra for this so I am rather disgruntled. I think a longer period should be allowed for box sets to be returned.

Brilliant work
Martin Shaw has never been better. It's wel acted and written with impressive plots that are anythign but predictale and - ultimately - left me in tears at the end. It harkens back to a day when (we fondly imagine) this is what honest law and order looked like.

so far two of the discs are faulty and we could not follow the plot or get the solution....
I am getting fed up with the faulty dvd's that Amazon sends out...I pay for them with real money and I get discs that are not watchable..-----please refund or replace.. but the latter only if discs are checked first. So far we have been unable to watch Series 1 and parts of Series 2.....

I liked how Detectives worked cases during the late 60's through to the late 70's,how they got on with not having mobile phones.Getting to know the characters, there life style how times have changed.Stories that have you guessing who was the culprit?
