Very impressed with this watch!
I collect watches, including Casio, Citizen, Tag etc, but this is my first Seiko. I wanted to get an automatic watch and I'm really glad I picked the Seiko 5. Opening the box, it just looked like a quality watch. The way the blue face catches the light really sets it off. It's not a large faced watch, but even though I'm 6ft 4 and I have a big wrist, it still manages to look right and stands out. Out of the box it was slightly too small to fit comfortably around my wrist so I got in touch with Seiko about extra links. They were a pleasure to deal with and I had the extra links within about 3 days, even though it was just before Christmas. It's early days, but it seems to keep time well and it's easy to set the time/day/date. I know some of the other reviews mention the bracelet not being solid etc. They are right, it isn't, and I get what they mean (I even bought it thinking it might swap the bracelet for something else) but personally I don't find it an issue. Yes it's light but it's well made, it looks good and it's comfortable so I won't be changing it. All in all this is a lot of watch for the money and I would recommend it to anyone. Its quickly becoming my regular watch and it won't be the last Seiko I end up buying.

Unbelievable Quality at the Price
I have a modest collection of watches, including 2 other Seiko 5 models, one of which is 14 years old. So, the Seiko 5 is well known to me. These are fantastic watches and unbelievable at this price. Why people buy some 'fashion' watches costing 3 or 4 times the price of a Seiko 5 is beyond me! I guess some individuals follow the herd and are more concerned about brand names.... This particular watch looks very handsome and understated with it's 37mm polished case, especially if you have a slim wrist and modern 40 mm plus cases look too big and ungainly. The dark blue dial is really subtle and almost mesmeric when it catches the light a particular way. A really legible dial, and plenty of quality 'lume' for readability in the dark. Well proven workhorse automatic movement, and a hardlex crystal, which whilst isn't as tough as a sapphire crystal is much more scratch resistant than standard mineral crystal. The style of this Seiko is such that it'll cover any occasion, from being worn with a dinner jacket right through to jeans and polo shirt. What's not to like? Well, not much! If you're not used to automatic mechanical watches, then you need to accept that they'll gain or lose a few seconds, even automatics costing thousands do that... And, whilst the bracelet is fine at this price, it's not fantastic. As some other reviewers have suggested, buy a leather strap, and the watch moves to an entirely different level, even if you only spend as little as £15.00 to £25.00. Personally, I bought a black Hirsch alligator embossed strap, and the watch looks like something that would have cost over £300.00 in a high-street jewelers. You can't really go wrong!

Trip down memory lane was worth it
I got this watch purely as a nostalgia trip. A Seiko 5 was my first proper (not digital) watch that I bought with some 18th birthday money way way way back in something like 1987. It's long long lost in the morass of the chaos of that time in my life. I'd forgotten how small mens' watches were back then. It looks tiny compared to my other watches seeing as 40mm seems like the new standard size. Worth bearing in mind if you are fond of a larger watch. However... I can't stop looking at it. Brings back all sorts of memories. There are some differences in the new watch. It's got a glass case back now so I can see the movement whereas the old one had just a stainless steel back. The rest just looks like the old watch. The nice minimalist face and the concealed offset crown are just as I remember them and give a clean and uncluttered line to the watch. Anyone who wears it on the right wrist will immediately appreciate this as there's no crown digging into your arm. Drawbacks? The movement doesn't immediately stop to reset the seconds on pulling out the crown with a hacking movement like most modern automatics. If you wind the hands backwards, however, the second hand reverses its path. This is quite disconcerting and takes a little practice to synchronise with an accurate timepiece. Secondly, there's no manual winder to charge this one up from dead. You just have to swing it about a bit and keep it on your arm or on a watch winder. That said, I just gave it a swing about for thirty seconds or so out of the box and put it on my wrist and it's been ticking ever since. The ticking isn't the most silent out there but really you have to have it up to your ear to hear it. The strap looks nice but is quite flimsy and the lugs to snap it shut might be prone to loosening with wear and tear. Plus points? Once you have got used to setting the date/day complication (you turn it the opposite way for the day) this is quite the classy feature and one of the things that originally drew me to it all those years ago. The blue on the face catches the light really nicely without being overstated and looks way more expensive than it actually is. The watch is very light on the arm and there's plenty of scope to adjust the bracelet length. The lume on the increments and minute/hour hands shows up quite well for a reasonable amount of time in the dark. On the whole the watch feels well made (which you'd expect from a manufacturer like Seiko). It's kind of a semi-vintage watch design now, I guess, but it feels current and stylish. I've not had it long enough to comment on timekeeping yet but it seems to be OK so far. If someone is looking for a nice timeless timepiece that's a proper watch with an actual mechanical movement and a proper tick then this is well worth the buy and it's going to stand up to any daily wear shenanigans. Just don't wear it in the shower too often as it's splash proof only.

This is an entry level Seiko 5 automatic. It will be the best watch you will buy for the money.
This is a 37mm case size Seiko. Compared to a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust this is about a tenth of the price. Nevertheless the build quality is excellent. The dial on this one is blue sunburst (I have two of these). Seiko entry level bracelets are notoriously rubbish. I replaced the first with an "oyster" bracelet. This one will be replaced with a "jubilee" bracelet. At the moment it has on it a French Marine Nationale parachute elastic strap in light navy with a white pinstripe. It looks beautiful. For little money you can have a really beautiful affordable watch that outshines any vapid fashion brand out there. With a decent cuff, jacket and tie you will look the proper gentleman (or lady) just behave in a manner that befits the watch. Water resistance isn't great. You won't be swimming in it. Hardlex is more scratch resistant than most crystals. The watch is extremely accurate and can be hacked if you know exactly what you are doing. Otherwise winding is done by the Seiko shuffle. I'll get the white one to complete the collection and that's it. Oh and they'll outlive you by years. Keep it out of the humidity and wear it. In the 80s the applied indeces were known to detach. Maybe not so much now.

I don’t recommend
don’t buy this SEIKO watch , I don’t recommend , the display on this watch is really tiny , you can barely see the screen , it looks nothing like the picture on the website , I’m sure it is a really nice watch , but trust me, it’s too small , the watch is barely visible , and the date in the watch is very visible , I don’t know why Seiko makes them so small , when I looked in the shop the other day they were big not like this one small , so avoid , or you will be returning it

I’m growing to love this watch more and more
Update May 2021 My watch is still going strong! I’m now working as an engineer working outside in all weather conditions in a physically demanding job. This has taken its fair share of knocks and it still looks great and has proven a rather reliable timepiece. I wear this all day everyday except when I’m the shower and it feels so comfortable. I’m growing to love this watch more and more This is my first automatic watch and I’m really enjoying wearing this daily. It looks handsome, classy and the materials are of a good quality; it’s even been mistaken for a Rolex. The only thing I may change in the future is the watch strap, as the colour doesn’t really go with the watch case perfectly. One annoyance is that this watch always goes 2/3 minutes fast even though I set the correct time only 24 hours ago but maybe that’s because I am very active with the watch on. I also had to get some links in the watch bracelet taken out to fit my wrist but this was only £5 from Timpsons who did a good job. As mentioned before I wear this daily and it is very comfortable and has proven reliable so far. It’s a great watch for this price

Nice movement in these watches but the strap is very ...
Nice movement in these watches but the strap is very thin and cheap looking. I tried to get a better strap but it seems that it is not possible as Seiko make their watch cases to their own specifications. I have treid to get my other Seiko automatic looked at at lots of high street watch repairers and NONE of them would touch it. Timpsons said that they could repair it but sent it back 10 days later saying (as all the others have said) that the glass is special, they don't have the parts etc. So, as far as this watch is concerned, it's very nice, keeps good time and looks OK apart from the naff strap, which it appears, cannot be replaced by a 'curved ends' type. I have other steel straps, not 'curved ends' and they fit OK but don't look as good. 19mm strap is what you need in case you want to try and upgrade your strap.
