Radio As It Should Be
Great Radio, FM is amazing on this deck as is DAB. Very easy to set up, all digital stations loaded up very fast and it was very easy to preset the stations I wanted with the memory button on the remote. I have this running into a Sony amp and the sound is fantastic. The service from Super fi was very fast. Ordered on a Sat evening, landed here the following Tue just after lunchtime, amazing as I'm in N Ireland so good going. Would buy from them again in the future. Update ..... Was using an indoor aerial with this fab unit but noticed signal break up during bad weather. So I had it connected up to my outside/roof-top FM aerial and wow. Now both FM and DAB are 10 time better. I now have the very best radio I have ever had. So glad I was able to make good use of my outdoor/roof-top FM aerial.

Radio listening as it should be!
Excellent hi-fi tuner! I needed to replace my old FM tuner with one that offered both FM and DAB and this tuner is perfect. The audio clarity on FM (BBC Radio 3 and 4) is better than on my old tuner and the DAB reception is good for BBC Radio 2 (for which FM seems to suffer where I live). Tuner set-up was similar to that for a modern TV, with automatic scanning - just two button pushes: one for FM and one for DAB to log all available stations. The remote is a bit small but does the job. The tuner itself is classic Yamaha: well built and solid. A special mention for the supplier, Peter Tyson, who delivered the tuner in just 2 days, i.e. in advance of Amazon's estimated date). So, well done all round.

Good reception and sound quality.
Bought this to replace a 20+ year old Kenwood tuner, on the strength of other reviews, and not disappointed. It locks on well to stations, and it's easy to program presets. Only two gripes; the AM waveband only covers MW, not LW; and the remote controller is small and fiddly to use, with small buttons labelled with small print. However, it's not essential to use it once the preset stations have been programmed, as it's possible to step through preset stations using the tuning knob (this can also be used for manual tuning if necessary). I tried programming a spare channel on my CD remote to recognise the tuner commands so that I could use it instead of the supplied remote; but Yamaha appear to use a set of commands that the other handset couldn't recognise. AM reception is better when using an earth - I used the phono earth connector on my amplifier. Generally very happy to recommend, although I knocked a point off for the handset.

All ‘right’ in the end.
This tuner has replaced a very good, inexpensive and reliable Cambridge one that had worked very well for over 15 years. The first example of the Yamaha to arrive was faulty with one channel not working on the FM part of the tuner. A very helpful Amazon representative and then Steven of Yamaha helped to decide that the first model needed replacing. The second tuner has worked very well so far on both DAB & FM. The AM side picks up very few stations with the antenna but I probably won’t use it anyway.

Sound Quality
Totally happy, the tuner is installed in a Hi end HiFi (£50k+) and sounds fine on decent programme material. The FM section works well on an indoor antenna and the DAB+ works as well as DAB+ can be via a roof DAB antenna. BBCR3 at 192kbs is decent quality but not as involving as via my Quad FM4 analogue tuner fed from a 17 element rooftop Yagi. Yamaha have done a good job and the TD500 is good value. However if you really value good sound quality be wary of DAB, for example SCALA Radio (generally at 120kbs) has execrable sound quality. The TD500 was delivered on time and just plugged in and worked, being a Yamaha product I expect it to keep working - probably until the broadcasters change the DAB+ format and it becomes obsolete just like DAB. The TD500 replaced a Videologic DAB tuner bought in the 1990s and now obsolete since it won't decode the DAB+ format which is not backwards compatible. (Watch out kids they keep it all hid). However none of this is the fault of Yamaha which I recommend or Amazon which I also recommend but wish they would pay their taxes fully. I do not imagine anyone has got this far but if you have well done, I know it was a ramble but I hope made some valid points.

But for a technical fault it could have been so good.
Sadly the tuner was faulty on arrival. It looked perfect but when connected (by a qualified engineer) the DAB part would not tune and the display screen came up with a load of symbols similar to wingdings. However the FM part worked fine. The system was powered down for the night and the next day, when switched on, we found that the FM tuner would not tune , and an attempted retune revealed that it would now only tune from 76MHz to about 100, instead of 87.5 to 108MHz, and the only station it would receive was Radio 4. It was obvious that there was something very wrong with the tuner, so it was removed and repacked for the carrier to collect, and full refund was issued. I believe that this particular machine may have been damaged internally whilst in transit from the far east to Europe or may have even been damaged during manufacture. It was a good looking machine and I still want one, but they are in short supply and it's just sad that this one was faulty. If and when I get a working replacement I hope to be able to revisit this page and write a much better review

Quality piece of kit
These days it's very hard to find a quality tuner at all. This was bought to replace my trusty Denon tuner which finally gave up the ghost. The sound on DAB is probably as good as it is possible to get, given the low bit rates used. I listen to Classic FM which broadcasts the highest quality available. Initially, I thought it sounded not quite as good as my old Denon. However, I think I had got used to the "Denon" sound but the more I listened to the Yamaha the more I liked it and I think it has a slightly more natural sound and just has the edge on the excellent Denon. I am very hard to please as I was a BBC sound engineer for thirty years, it doesn't get more critical than that. Build quality is excellent, very easy to set up and the info button gives lots of information such as bit rate, error rate and signal strength as well as much more. The remote is cheap and very nasty, not fit for a quality piece of kit like this, but I never use it so it doesn't bother me at all. It's very reasonably priced for the quality, if you're in the market for a good tuner this is probably as good as it gets. Recommended.

Good Kit
I am very pleased with mine, it replaces an old tuner I had for twenty years. All points good, sound perfect, ease of tuning very good. I recommend you get a proper aerial up as the little bit of wire they supply is a waste of time. I know all makers supply the same thing but that does not make it good. I use the coax output into a Yamaha s701, note you also need the RCA leads connected. So yes, I would buy it a again.
