It's good!
If you are a casual LotR fan it's good. Solid card game, tough decisions because you have to pay a card to play a card. Rules are easier then War of Ring board game. Solo with expansion is also good. If your a LoTR story fan, being book & movie fan and you enjoy card games. Your like me, your gonna love it! This is the book story with items/characters that weren't shown in the movie. 4 stars casual fan, 5 stars if book fan. Enjoy.

Excellent and clever, but good play requires deck knowledge.
This isn't a fast game. You need players who are willing to relax into it and ponder. This might be difficult for players not familiar with the source material, and/or who aren't willing to lay back and soak in the theme. And, although there are various scenarios and expansions to allow for different numbers of players (from 1 to 6), this game was really designed for precisely 4 players. Any other player count is likely to be a good but sub-par experience. However, if you find the right players, this might become your #1 game. I've been playing a wide variety of hobby board and card games for over a decade, and this has become my favorite. Still, it's not perfect. Playing well isn't only a matter of making the most optimal use of the cards you hold to face the challenge on the table in front of you at the moment. Instead, you need to keep in mind the contents of your deck - and that of all other decks - or at least be aware of their capabilities in order to judge whether to press forward on the current attack or to hold back because you know the cards you hold would be better spent on another battle that you know is likely coming. You still might make the play though, because you have a limited number of options and you can't count on those future battles coming around how you might expect them to. Even if they did, should you really sacrifice the current battlefield just in hopes of having a better chance at winning a hypothetical future encounter? Depends on what cards you have yet to draw, or have cycled and might see again, or that have been removed from the game entirely. As well as what complementary cards your teammate might have, and what particularly worrisome cards your opponents might have. In summary, this is an excellent game, hindered only by the difficulty in finding precisely 3 other friends who have the correct temperament and expectations to play a game of this type, as well as the fact that the players should have similar familiarity with the cards and what each deck can do. Having a teammate who is significantly less or more familiar with the game than you is likely to be a frustrating experience.

Gameplay is VERY confusing for beginners!
Too confusing to learn. My sister & I sat for like an hour trying to figure out how to play the two-player version. Whoever wrote the rulebook needs to be fired. They should rewrite it with much greater clarity.
