Best Headphones I'll Probably Ever Own
Superb headphones, these are probably the most expensive headphones I've ever owned so these should obviously beat anything I've tried before (Sennheiser 598s, Momentum Wireless 3s etc). However, with that in mind and despite myself being a very amateur audiophile; I noticed an immediate difference as soon as I tried these. The bass and bass response is unmatched, it's not overbearing and there's just the right amount of "rumble" in the sub-bass frequencies. The mids and trebles are colourful, detailed and expansive. That being said, despite the clarity and somewhat neutral sound signature, they don't feel boring or analytical in any way whatsoever. I haven't quite put my finger on what kind of sound signature this is (it's slightly V shaped for sure in terms of EQ balance but regardless) but it's absolutely enchanting, Denon have absolutely nailed this headphone. I've used these mainly for gaming, music and watching movies. This is one of those experiences where I'm rediscovering favourite songs because I'm hearing rhythms and sounds that I didn't know existed. I've got these plugged into a budget DAC/AMP combo (FiiO E10K Olympus 2) and yet they still sound fantastic. Few key (positive) points: - Build quality is second to none, the satisfying "click" of the ball bearing headband and the feel of the sheepskin leather headband and protein leather earpads are immediately recognisable as high quality. - They look absolutely fantastic, the wood finish looks even better in person and due to the nature of wood each pair is obviously unique (for all you kleptomaniacs out there). - The earpads can be easily removed. Videos on YouTube show people pulling the actual pad out of the housing but that isn't necessary, they're held onto a "frame" (of sorts) which is secured to the earcup with four clips. Pushing on the sides of the earpads inward is enough to get them off for cleaning. - The wire is high quality, looks and feels great (as you'd expect from something Japanese made). - Overall, these are some comfy buggers, the earcups/earpads feel almost weightless against the head and there's just enough clamping force to secure them firmly but not hurt the head or jaw (for skinny folk like myself, these wont make the underside if your jaw sore!) - I wear these all day every day, no fatigue or anything (they feel very light when actually on your head). Some slightly negative or neutral points: - Marked 4 stars for comfort despite the previous point but only because of the headband. While the headband itself is fine there is a *slight* hotspot right at the top, depending on the shape of your head and where the headband is resting you might feel it. Doesn't bother me hugely since it happens rarely and moving the headband 1cm forward or backward is enough to make it go away. - Marked 4 stars for value for money. While this is a *quality* pair of headphones and produces an amazing sound; I would've figured these would be cheaper by now given that they came out a while ago (but, this may be my fault for not being overly familiar with headphone economics) - Remember, this comes with a 6.3mm (1/4 inch) headphone jack so you may need an adapter. If you're looking at these headphones you probably already know this but plug these into a DAC/AMP to get the best sound possible. On a final note, if you have the money and the equipment at home to drive these (if you don't, another £50 on the same DAC/AMP as me will sort you out) then take the plunge and buy them, you absolutely wont regret it. //Edit - around January/February the headband stopped being an issue, so four(ish) months on and no complaints any more. I'm guessing the headband maybe shifted/moulded in order to fit my head better (I do have a small head mind you so your mileage may vary).

Truly excellent closed back headphone
I ordered the D5200 last week when their price dropped temporarily to a tempting point, although the original intention was to get the D7200: at 2x the price, I decided to get the sister model. It has been a surprise that I ended up liking them so much. Thus far my favourite closed back model was the LCD-2CB and these sound very similar, are easier to power and, most importantly, do not weight over 600g like the Audeze. These are comfortable although I personally would have preferred a lighter headband rather than the leather and metal combination found on this model: it does look very good but in my view it weighs more than it should. I am not someone who cares about packaging or accessories, so I won't go there. The sound of this headphone is something I'd describe as "Focal Clear meets Beyerdynamic DT770", to mention models I own and know very well. It has a very high level of clarity, which I found quite surprising based on the reviews of the older sister D7200 with whom I believe shares the same drivers, matched by powerful and impactful bass that is not omnipresent and invasive, at least for my taste. If you think the bass of an HD600 is just enough, I suspect you will find the bass of the D5200 too much. Vocals are very well reproduced, at least the one I like which tend to stay not higher than altos: for example Melody Gardot or Diana Krall sound great on this, and so does Bocelli. Overall the sound is very engaging, more than I expected by this brand, and that is the area where, along with the clarity, they make me think to my Focal Clear. I have not listened the D7200 so, unfortunately, I cannot offer a comparison. However the frequently reported criticism of the recessed high register of the D7200 seems to have no place for the D5200: I suppose Denon heard the criticism and successfully fixed this aspect. I am not able to say if elsewhere the strenghts of the D7200 were lost of washed-up. Honestly, I am very happy with these and they do not leave me wanting in any area, hence I will just settle with these and let others report on D7200, which I am not convinced is better just because it costs more, and D9200 which is likely better but way too expensive to justify and hard to find used. If these are out of your budget, consider the much cheaper AKG K371: less soundstage, not that good with strings and orchestral work but overall really a great buy.

Very reliable headphone with some issues
Really like the wood cups. Bass is ok. But I am having the LCD-X and thought this was going to have more bass than the LCD-X since this is a closed-back headphone. In my opinion this has bass but not more than the LCD-X. The main reason I give up is that the sound is muffled. When I listen to the LCD-X, the sound is more airy, and also the bass is good. This has bass but at the sacrifice of a muffled sound. There may be a problem with my item; I do not know. But the price difference may play a big role.

Wonderful. Musical, fast, engaging. Perfect for electronica/synthpop. I love the bass.

The sound of these headphones are really great, but the comfort is bad, to much clamping force and fattige to your ears in longer listenings.
