A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan

Killer Blues Tribute
Some of the best in Blues paying tribute to one of the greatest Blues guitarists to have ever lived. Stevie Ray left us way to early due to a tragic accident that left fans saddened and stunned. His musical legacy will live on forever. The disc has nothing but the finest musicians honoring the big man from Texas.

the tribute is really what it's all about
I think most of the reviews here miss the point of what this concert was about. It wasn't about "Jimmie Vaughan getting to share the stage with bigger names" or lining up the best blues artists to showcase them. Stevie died the night after performing at a blues festival in Alpine Valley Wisconsin...(hence the opening lines to "Six Strings Down")...who else performed at that festival? Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan...you get the picture? The tribute was about the artists that shared the stage with him that fateful night (and on previous tours) coming together to honor their colleague and share his memory. The idea was conceived by Art Neville and Jimmie Vaughan a few years after Stevie's death. There were thoughts of this within a year or two, but Jimmie had felt that was too soon. After a certain time of mourning, Jimmie and Art decided to round up this cast and have the tribute concert...not only to honor Stevie, but as a form of healing and closure for all of them.I remember seeing this concert airing on PBS and thought it was wonderful, keeping in mind the tribute and the fellowship that these musicians had together and their previous times sharing the stage with SRV. That for me makes this DVD worth owning...maybe I'm just an old sentimental nostalgic sap.I was also fortunate enough to see SRV and Double Trouble in 1988, and at the time they were touring with The Fabulous Thunderbirds...at one point in SRV's set, he invited Jimmie out on stage and they jammed together for a few songs. A very wonderful moment to share the stage together like that when they were both at the apex of their careers. Yes SRV was far more talented, but of course they loved each other as brothers and in fact it was Jimmie that initially taught Stevie how to play the guitar. Of course in time Stevie the pupil far surpassed his teacher, and the rest is history. So slam the talent and the stage energy if you want, but this DVD is about far more than that. It's about remembering a legend who died far too soon.

An Allstar Tribute to One of the Greatest Bluesman & Guitarist of All Time - The Late/Great Stevie Ray Vaughan !!!!!!
Again, like the "Tribute" concert for Gram Parsons, this is another outstanding tribute concert. This time to the late/great Stevie Ray Vaughan. All the stars in this tribute, show sincere respect for Stevie & his music. You get an outstanding "Allstar" line-up of blues musicians including Stevie's brother Jimmy Vaughan. I like the way this concert was presented. I wouldn't change a thing, its simply fantastic the way it is.The concert is as follows: (You get Double Trouble - Chris Layton on drums, Tommy Shannon on bass, & Reese Wymans on keyboards along with the "Allstar" musicians):1. Almost great
Well the list of guitarists is something to be expected considering they are paying homage to one of the greatest guitar players of all time. However it seems that his brother Jimmie in this DVD uses this as an opportunity to play with the greats. Instead of allowing the great guitarists play their hearts out they seem to be in the background of a sub par guitarist. The first thing I thought when I saw this was Stevie would have been furious seeing these great guitarists playing behind his brother. These people needed to be showcased instead of dropped in the background. Once you get used to this the interviews are really nice hearing these great blues players talk about Stevie. There playing was really cool, it is definitely something to watch and enjoy, and the last song SRV Shuffle on the DVD is really fun to watch. It would have been better if Jimmie had got out of the way though. Would have been a five star if he would have just let the better musicians play in the spotlight instead of trying to steal the spotlight.

well worth buying
It's more than a concert film, so I didn't find the interviews a bothersome interruption, more like valuable tributes to SRV perfectly complementing the musical performances. I especially appreciated hearing BB King, Eric Clapton, and Buddy Guy all marveling at SRV's just pouring out music, like a transmitter, never pausing to think or plan or collect his wits halfway through a solo. I loved Bonnie Raitt here, I loved Dr. John, Robert Cray, brother Jimmie; just everybody "showed up" and performed generously and bravely in SRV's honor. Filmed and recorded perfectly, too.

A Different Look at SRV's Music
"A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan" is probably not what you would expect; it's less of a documentary and more of a farewell concert. The artists chosen to play each of SRV's songs tend to lose the feeling of his music in translation over the course of the show, but on the same token it's interesting to see how each artist would have played the song if it was them who wrote it. All in all, it's a good addition to the library of anyone who is a fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Pride & Joy
Stevie was probably the best guitar player of all time, he mastered the instrument and then some! The tributes are very accurate and explains why others are of the same thoughts as I am. If you want lifting into the world of Blues Blues/Rock this is for you. My friends and I were captivated by this DVD of SRV tribute.

An answer to a couple of earlier comments.
First of all this WAS a PBS TV special which appeared on Austin City Limits. Second, anyone who thinks Jimmie Vaughan can't play the guitar doesn't know what they are talking about. He and Stevie's styles are very different but they are both excellent guitar players. Even Eric Clapton says so. Jimmie's style is much more economical than Stevie's but he's a wonderful guitar player non-the-less. Don't equate flash with ability. Stevie was a flashier guitarist but that doesn't negate Jimmie's ability what-so-ever.

We miss him
A slew of guitar greats pay tribute to SRV. Features and interviews his brother Jimmy, BB King, Slowhand, and others backed by SRV's band. Recorded in Austin with some interview footage plus clips of SRV. Only thing better would be on Blu-ray.
