As it happens I own both this and the 35mm 1.8. In terms of sharpness there is no comparison whatsoever - the 35mm is much sharper by far. Having said that if you're prepared to sharpen your photos in post processing you should get a more than acceptable image quality. Where this lens comes into it's own is the amazing range from wide angle to 300mm telephoto. By their very design a zoom lens can never be as sharp as a prime lens the greater the zoom range the bigger drop in sharpness. What it really boils down to is if it's sharp enough for you to find acceptable.

what is the best uv filter for this lens

Not the answer you wanted but most experts are dead set against uv filters. They were great for film which was degraded by light, but they just cut precious light getting to the digital camera sensor - this lens is really high on the f numbers anyway relative to a 50mm prime lens. . A plastic hood in strong light protects the lens, and a neutral density set of filters (square one that fixes on the front) or a circular polarising filter work much better to control sunlight.

Would this lens give you good quality flexibility to do portraight shots in the studio close up and ful body sharp photos?

In response to your query. If you are looking to do majority of your portrait work in studio, then a prime lens is preferred over a zoom. A typical focal length being 70-135mm on a full frame. Portrait work for most part requires a shallow depth of field, so a 1.8-2.8 f, good in low light, being preferred by portrait photographers. A prime lens should allow for better quality over a zoom (fewer elements) so sharper image, more control, less flare.Having said all of the above, the Nikon 18-300 is an excellent lens, and as for portrait work (unlike architectural) one does not use 'edge to edge' so no reason why images should not be sharp. Also remember that for portrait work, particularly on women, one looks for a 'softer' image, as more flattering. Most quality cameras have a portraiture feature built into the software as part of the menu programme. Rgds.
