Sound BlasterX Katana RGB Soundbar with Subwoofer Black

For the last 10 years or more I've had my PC hooked up to a number of different AV receivers for 5.1 audio in gaming in the living room, and sometimes hooked up to the TV instead of a monitor. I usually have the audio output in DTS 5.1 via optical, or through the HDMI from my nVidia GPU. Now I'm married I have to be all grown up and let my wife use the 5.1 setup and TV for watching stuff on Netflix. Currently we use Wharfedale Jade 3 front LR, a Wharfedale DX1 5.1 setup for atmos front height, and the remaining channels and sub, and a Denon AVR X2300W So, for the last few months when I've not been using my 5.1 setup or my Astro A50 headset, I've had my Creative Labs Roar2 bluetooth speaker handling my PC audio. It actually didn't do a bad job for its size, but it definitely isn't what I would call an ideal solution (it's designed mostly as a mobile phone or iPod speaker). I've been thinking of getting the X Katana soundbar for a while and read a LOT of reviews over a few weeks, checked out lots of vids on Youtube and they all said more or less the same thing. Great quality, gimicky RGB lighting but great if you like that kinda thing, tacky remote, curious lack of HDMI input, and surprisingly good audio once you tweak it a bit, and maybe ok for using under the TV. After using this for a week or so, I absolutely agree with all the points I read about and saw on the Youtube vids (except for TV/movies as I will never use it with our TV anyway). The build quality is typical of Creative Labs, who's kit I've been using since my first Sound Blaster 16 purchase about 23 years ago. It's very sturdy, looks really smart with a great finish. The sub woofer looks just like a black plywood box, but it's hidden behind my PC so I don't really care too much. The remote control is the same as you would find in most RGB lighting kits. The buttons are awkward to press but it does the job I guess. No optical cable is included, but I didn't personally need one because I hooked it up to my PC via USB. I might eventually try and hook it up to my Sound Blaster ZS card using Optical to try out the true Dolby processing, but so far I don't feel the need. One big reason for me buying this instead of discrete speakers is because I have a full simrig set up a bucket seat, Fanatec racing kit, with my monitors permanently mounted, using a Rocat lapboard for the keyboard and mouse, and some Buttkicker LFE transducers. Basically I don't have much space for discrete speakers, and when I'm driving in Assetto Corsa or Project Cars it's in VR on the Oculus Rift so I don't necessarily need another PC specific 5.1 setup. The Katana is small enough to fit my lack of available space, and powerful enough for any non-VR gaming and music listening duties. The kit comes with detachable feet and wall mount brackets. My monitor is on a floorstand, so I have no desk to place the Katana on, so I used some strips of Velcro to create a pair of loops and hung the Katana off my monitor mount at the necessary height below the monitor. It looks slighly odd, however its perfectly secure and saves me trying to attach the wall mounts to the back of my curved monitor. After connecting everything it took me a bit of googling to locate the Sound Blaster Connect 2 software and the related X Katana firmware update. If you are using this on PC you definitely must use the Connect 2 software to tweak the audio, otherwise the default stereo separation is really narrow, limited and disappointing. Once I tweaked the software by enabling the Crystaliser to liven up the sound, and use the Concert mode to expand the stereo separation, the X Katana sounds really lively and impressive. Even the sub woofer does a pretty decent job, and there have been no occasions when I've been tempted to switch it off and go back to my Denon kit and Wharfedale kit. That's not to say this is better, or anywhere near as good and detailed as my living room setup (it's not), but it isn't supposed to rival a full setup. The major reason I've not gone back is partly because I would have basically wasted £230, but also because this setup does a genuinely great job with my games and music for the price. The volume is ear-splitting and painful if you are feeling insane and jack it up to the maximum. I accidentally set it to full volume and deafened myself and scared the hell out of my wife when I tried Spotify. I won't make the same mistake again! At normal human listening volumes the sound is expansive, detailed and bassy without sounding like such a small unit. Even the pseudo 7.1 processing is fairly convincing at times. Most of my gaming has been The Division since I got the X Katana, which involves a lot of dialogue, shooting, explosions and ambient sound, and it's all handled excellently. I've had no problem using the audio to pinpoint where shots are coming from. All the detail and performance I want is there with zero complaints. Music also holds up really nicely. I listen to a lot of gaming related soundtracks, Hans Zimmer OST's, and a mix of music from Depeche Mode to Prodigy to NiN. Basically anything electronic, moody and bassy. On my living room setup I limit most music to the highest quality Spotify tracks as Youtube tracks sound dull, mushy and compressed by comparison. The X Katana however is a lot more forgiving for Youtube listening as you can't really pick up the same level of detail, and its not really possible to tell the difference between Youtube and Spotify high quality. My review was going to be 4 stars originally because I was comparing this to my living room kit, but that's really unfair as my Denon AVR and Wharfedale front speakers, mass loaded stands, and sub probably cost close to £1k. The fact I've not been very tempted to go back to that setup speaks volumes about how decent the X Katana really is for mainstream music listening, and some action heavy gaming. I would easily recommend this to anyone who is either short of space, or wants something better than a bog-standard desktop 2.0 or 2.1 setup.

Expensive impulse buy (wanted some better speakers for a small office). Worth it? Yes. I was moving up from a basic but decent stereo speaker set up and the difference is night and day. I'm no audio expert but the sound is just gloriously rich and clean, the sub adds a lot of bass while the soundbar is just wow. I've read reviews for this praising its 'wide soundstage' etc and I can actually understand what they mean, it just fills the room with great sound. I was especially skeptical about 2.1 producing surround sound but it works. This will be my main PC speaker for the foreseeable future. Have connected bluetooth and PC but haven't tried any other connection options. Good: Awesome sound. Far too powerful for my office (I rarely push it past volume 14 and it goes up to 50). Solid heavy construction. Looks very neat. Lots of audio connection options if needed. Made a huge quality difference to my PC gaming / cinema experience. Lighting is beautiful at night. Downloaded software is interesting and adds a lot of functionality (voice changer - not tried, extra lighting options - nice, different game sound profiles - meh). Remote control provided. Cons: Expensive (in hindsight for me it was worth it - just a bit of a risk). Does not work well with my Corsair Gaming Headphones on Skype (cuts the mic out, presumably as the soundbar is acting as my sound card and wants the headphones routed via it.) Lights don't sync with sound and can get a bit distracting though they can be turned off. Soundbar feet aren't high enough to clear my monitor base so it sits slightly proud. Remote control is really useful but its build quality is so different to the rest of the system (it's the stock credit card size junk remote you get in lots of devices these days.)

I use it as an under-monitor speaker system. It works great and produces sound quality unachievable by el-cheapo speakers -- that much is very clear to me. Having said that, it still looks expensive for what it is. The signal processing options (concert hall, cinema, night e.t.c.) are a bygone era gimmick. Instead, I would love a minimalistic "bass cut" button. The subwoofer clearly works well and packs a good punch, but on some occasions, I would rather it to stay mute (e.g. late night) while I still use the "regular" sounds. At this moment I achieve that by just disconnecting the cable, which is clearly suboptimal. I might consider modding it with a physical switch when I get to it. The IR remote is cheap. Certainly too cheap for the kind of quality I expect from SoundBlaster brand, knowing that you get the same quality remote bundled with a value 10gbp RTL-SDR dongle, or 15gbp colour LED lights. In general, I will keep it. I won't return it. But next time, I will try some other brand. ---- UPDATE after 3 months: Changes: * The remote -- turns out to be fairly useful - I hope I don't lose it * The LED lights -- I managed to set to a discreet "non-disco" mode, and they are OK now. I have set it up to be elevated by a 3D printed stand, and tilted, so now the lights illuminate the shelf that was created underneath. What's still great: * Sound quality - I continue to be impressed. What is still meh: * The DSP modes. Not useful. * I am still thinking about getting the "bass cut button" mod (instead of having to use remote to reduce/boost bass). I would appreciate it if the manufacturer gave it "cut/normal/boost" physical button in line with the rest of the buttons. You might think that having good bass is a good thing? Yes, it's nice when you want to enjoy it, but it's annoying to your family before 5 am, and to your neighbour after 11 pm thumping his house -- when I just want to read my emails.

Absolutely superb 2.1 sound system, and though this is marketed as a 7.1 under monitor sound bar(though you do have to be right in the sweet spot just above the sound bar to get the best 7.1 and it does sound brilliant using it like this) ...it creates equally stunning 2.1 audio hooked to the tv in the living room and thats what I bought it for. Lets be honest though, 2.1 stereo is not as good as a decent dolby 5.1/7.1 surround set up but if like me you want a simple solution to upgrade from those tinny tv speakers they seem to put on every flatscreen... this is the way to go. I watched the force awakens on it last night and the sound was epic. Crystal clear vocals and score with a nice bassy punch from the subwoofer on the action scenes... the audio filled the living room. Music as well sounds brilliant through the system and on top of that it looks really neat under my tv. It is loud as well... very loud at full volume which is 50 with no distortion, but I will probably never take the volume past 20 as this is high enough to fill the living room with a nice listenable level. Ive listened to other 2.1 systems that were three times the price of the Katana and they did not sound much better than this. The sleak design together with optional rgb underlighting makes this sound bar very attractive in more ways than one for this price. ((I was actually going to go for a bose solo 5 but Im glad I bought this instead... it just sounds ace and looks brilliant under the tv. Bravo... Creative!))

Require a replacement for my old Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 system, where the optical input was starting to play up and I found that the vast majority unsuitable (no optical input, bass speaker contains the controls etc) so when I saw this come out I was pleased. Now I've got it home I've found that it can take the place of my Echo when I'm on my computer (a sensible logical add on) and the audio itself is good quality with little or no distortion (on occasions I've not realised it was playing as loud as it was until SWMBO has buzzed me on the internal tele system, whoops). The only thing is that I haven't found a way to imitate 5.1 sound, with the old system it was literally push 2 buttons and it was there, even with the optical lead, not so with this even though some of the reviews imply you can. Worth the price...in real terms it was cheaper than my previous system Good quality audio but as for it managing to create a 5.1 effect is questionable. Remote works ok. That just leaves the LEDs, don't know what they're supposed to do but they are colourful. Big question would I purchase another...probably as the price is reasonable and it is a tidy little unit, no wires running around the room so SWMBO has one less thing to moan about (for that alone it's worth the 5 stars)

Ok first of all,a little background info.For years i have been using a 5.1 surround system that kicked out 200 watts.I used this for gaming and for my music playing. And it has served me wll over that time:but it was time to get rid of all the wires that came with the speakers. So after looking around,and heard a friends soundbar i decided on this one. Also i was familar with Sound blaster:from the old days when i used their sound cards in my Computers. The sound bar arrived a few days early(Happy with that) So i set it up(easy enough) and tried it. Well it sounded ok:but not great.So after a quick chat with my freind,i downloaded the correct software for this amp/bar. Well thats when this soundbar came alive.It went from ok to Awesome ,the things that you can adjust with this software is frankly remarkable. Things that i could never do with my old 5.1 System. And i am still experimenting with the settings,so still learning. One thing to note that on the Amazon listing that i looked at,it said that the saoundbar/amp had a total output of 180 watts. On the box that it arrived in,it states 150 watts output. Don't let this put you off though.Because unless you are trying to play music in the Alber Hall:this system is well up to the job in a average household.

Had been looking for a sound bar to replace a old 2 way set up on my pc for abit & after reading the reviews i brought this pros the sound from this bar is spot on easy to set up just three leads one power lead bass bin & one to your sound card or which way you connect it USB,digital audio output. The bass from it set to normal as you can go -4 +4 with the remote will rock your floor volume set to 20% is loud.The software for changing the sound is good you can tune your sound to how you like it not hard to understand nice interface with some nice presets Dislikes When you plug in headphones you have to to keep moving the bar as the in puts are on the back would have been better if they had put it on the top or side of the bar Cons The RGB lighting with the software you get from off line its not that great cant brighten the lights for me there to dim i got a RGB Strip around the pc desk that brighter and that any cost £10 with more settings then this unit as with the software as you cant change many settings with it when it comes to the RGB lighting they might change it in a update who knows in time as on line there is frame ware up dates that you need to download but i brought it for sound not the lighting so if your looking for a good sound bar this could be for you

Excellent speakers. The soundbar frees up so much space on my desk, as it just sits under my monitor nicely. The sound quality is incredible and can get VERY loud, I have my volume on about 10 out of 100 and that's loud enough for me! No distortion noticed. The led strip under the soundbar is a great touch and works fluidly, it's the first thing people notice when they see my setup - very eye catching. Overall the built quality is great, sound quality is punchy with great bass and vocals, looks stunning in any setup and I just highly recommend this system. 5/5 stars, definitely worth buying if you can get passed the steep price tag and I honestly think it's worth every penny.
