Slingbox M1 TV Box

Over a period of time I have seen negative reviews about this product and it has put me off but I eventually decided to give it a go and could not be happier with the purchase.I have used it connected to my Sky TV and the set up wizard in the product was very clear and made the process simple.I am in the UK and my son has logged on to it using a web browser and watched the TV from Chile. He said it worked perfectly.I recently went to Spain, and used it for a week there and it worked perfectly on a 5 mbit connection, ditto from Eire. I have used both a web browser and an iPad.If you want to watch your TV whilst abroad as if you are sat at home then this is what you need. Watch live TV, watch your recorded programs, watch Catch Up, set new recordings, etc.I have previously used HMA VPN to watch programs live or use Sky Go/ BBC iPlayer/ITV hub but Slingbox is much better if you have a Sky box.Yes there is a bit of lag using the on screen remote so it is a bit fiddly and there is the occasional ad, but these are a small price to pay.

Cons1. Although the specs and instructions say it works in "up to HD", It's not HDCP compliant which means it won't work with newer Sky HD or Virgin boxes that have copy protection. (That's why it doesn't have an HDMI socket).2. Connecting your Sky box using an HDMI to composite converter doesn't work either because the converter can't circumvent the copy protection.3. Some say they got round the HDCP copy protection by using an HDMI splitter. The cheap ones are said to strip the HDCP from the signal but I tried 3 different ones that supposedly worked for others but didn't for me.4. The answer from Slingbox is to include a scart to composite adaptor which works but only in SD with poor picture quality.5. If the Slingbox M1 doesn't manage to automatically set itself up correctly for viewing over the Internet there's very little you can do to make it work. The setup options are limited to checking it's connected to your home network. There's no option on the M1 to manually set up viewing over the Internet.6. If your in the UK there's no UK phone number for Slingbox support, only one in the US.7. Apart from telling me to check the cables were correctly connected, Slingbox support just blamed my router and Computer for the Slingbox failure to connect over the Internet. Even though I explained I had tried 3 computers an iPad, iPhone, 2 different routers, port forwarding and DMZ, Slingbox support would not admit the problem was with the Slingbox8. Hidden fees. If it does work you then have to put up with adverts on the sling player app or pay £10.99 for an add free version. Very greedy when you've already paid for the Slingbox and it won't work without the app.ProsIf your happy with standard definition poor picture quality and just want to watch and control your Sky HD box from your phone or tablet over your wifi network within the home then this should do this with minimal setup. However using the remote control feature takes several seconds to actually change the channel even on a very fast network with the Slingbox connected via Ethernet cable.Getting HD or viewing over the Internet is hit and miss with no support when it doesn't work.

It took about 10 minutes to setup and got a bit fiddly when installing the software and connecting the m1 to wifi, but soon after it is working perfectly. I haven't tried it abroad yet, which hopefully wont change my review...otherwise I think it is great for the money and not sure I understand the complaints, especially with so few alternatives.

I've used a Slingbox since 2008 as I've worked outside of the UK for various periods.In 2016, after having been back in the UK for 4 years, I am going away again so was looking forward to setting up the latest version of the Slingbox with a Sky+ HD box and getting HD quality TV abroad.In short, this hasn't happened and my advice would be to think carefully before buying it. It has only worked via the old Scart connection from the Sky box - I never thought I would using Scart again in 2016! It is not completely useless if you want to watch UK TV from abroad as long as you don't mind SD quality, but if you are used to streaming using Netflix it feels obsolete and technology that is on its last legs with VPNs giving a better and simpler service abroad and services like Netflix going worldwide.In more detail:-the main issue is that the only HD input into the Slingbox is via a 'component' connection. It doesn't accept HDMI. But, while older Sky/Virgin boxes had component and HDMI connections, the modern ones only have HDMI. Therefore, unless you have an older Sky/Virgin box, your M1 Slingbox does not work for HD as you buy it.-Slingmedia recognise the problem on their website, but just direct you to a Chinese site that sells an HDMI-component converter. That Chinese site, however, only ships to the US. I have tried two converters bought myself (around £30 each) - the first didn't work at all, the second only at 576 resolution which is still rubbish.-As I understand, the reason for Slingmedia not having an HDMI connection may be to do with copy protection around HD signals. As far as I'm concerned though, that is irrelevant; Slingmedia are selling it as an HD box for the UK market when it isn't. Draw your own conclusions from that. I've wasted a lot of time and money trying to get it to work and it doesn't.Also:-it just feels like it's on its last legs. The only way of watching the output on a TV on a stand-alone basis (ie not via your phone/tablet) is via Amazon Fire, yet the feedback online is that the Sling app for Amazon fire does not work with the latest 4k Fire box. I just managed to find an old Fire box; the Sling app works but again the quality is not good enough-be aware that this is expensive! Not just the initial cost, but all the cables, the converters, the apps to watch cost money. And be prepared to spend a lot of time setting it up!

Nachdem mein Slingbox Solo der Geist aufgegeben hat nach 8 Jahre treue Dienst, merkte ich plötzlich wie viel ich mein Slingbox täglich benutze. Vor allem jetzt das ich klein Kinder zuhause habe, kann ich Sat Fernschauen auf mein Tablet ohne die ganze Familie zu stören. Habe sofort der M1 bestellt, obwohl der Wifi function brauche ich gar nicht. Mein Solo schliesse ich per Ethernet Kabel an mein Heimnetz.Das Bildqualität uber der Solo ist viel besser, sowohl im heimnetz als auch in Ausland. Bestimmt eine Verbesserte komprimierungsalgorithmus oder sowas. Super klares Bild. Wer braucht HD auf ein I-Phone wenn gestochen scharfes SD reicht und spart Bandbreite.

El M1 es más estable sobre Wi-Fi que el P20 Pro que tenía anteriormente, y es compatible con la app SlingPlayer de Amazon. Te permite ver la TV de tu decodificador en cualquier sitio de tu casa o del mundo, siempre que tengas buen internet. Hay que pasar la salida HDMI de tu decodificador a componentes, por ejemplo con el adaptador Portta a 30 euros, pero de esta manera se consigue calidad HD. Salvo que el aparato esté al lado del router, mejor conectar todo por cables. Insisto, hay que tener buen internet tanto en salida (fibra óptica), como en llegada (buen Wi-Fi, 4G), pero puedes ver tu satélite o tu contrato de TV en cualquier sitio, incluso en una TV 4K, siempre que de alguna manera tengas una conexión con la aplicación SlingPlayer. No hay manual de instrucciones completo. Sobre la marcha descubres que hay que mantener el botón reset hasta que la luz de red parpadee tres veces, para que la conexión sea por cable en lugar de Wi-Fi. Para terminar decir que el M1 está ahora a un precio muy razonable.

Chi scrive che il sistema non è stabile non si rende conto che questo fenomeno è legato alla connessione. Io ho guardato una partita di calcio intera da un camper in australia con una connessione 3g ed un iphone, senza mai perdere la connessione e nemmeno la sincronia audio/video. Inoltre va ricordato che le adsl di casa sono "sbilanciate", cioè sono penalizzate in upload. Quindi come si fa a pretendere di avere uno streaming a 5 Mbs senza alcun problema? Ho usato i prodotti Slingbox per 8 anni, e posso dire con cognizione di causa che, a quel prezzo, sono i migliori streamer sul mercato. Flessibilità, stabilità, gestione dei comandi in remoto con simulazione dei telecomandi ineguagliabile. Da acquistare ad occhi chiusi.
