I have read and bought pretty much most books related to China published in the last 20 some years and more. Professor Jin’s book is by far the most comprehensive, insightful, and objective reading of China, especially its intertwined political and economical system. This book will give you real understanding about what China has done in the last four decades to produce the China miracle. And what China and Chinese people are really aspiring to do next. China is not the boogeyman American politicians and media made out to be. You would understand that China is not trying to conquer the world and does not pose existential threats to America and the West.The book at the first seems went a bit light on criticizing the Chinese government. But after you have read through the book, AND comparing China with dysfunctional American Democracy, one would appreciate why. It is so ironical that a so called authoritarian system made 1.4 billion people’s life dramatically better and a “By the People, For the people” system made average American’s live stagnant in the last four decades.It would have been academic interest. But amid today’s loud drumbeats about “China Threat”, this book will give everyone a sobering dose of reason and rethinking. As a country, what are we really doing? I lived and worked in China for a number of years and came to realize that it is not at all as it is portrayed in the West. I knew that they do things differently, often in ways that totally confound Westerners, but it works for them. I have read many books and listened to many podcasts, etc., to try to figure out just makes China tick. Dr. Jin's book is by far the best book yet for explaining China to Westerners. I most highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get beyond the Western mindset to truly understand how it works.

I enjoyed reading the book because it gave me, with its clear analysis, a new way for looking at China in quite a comprehensive way. It explains how individual towns and districts can develop in their chosen ways despite the apparent dictate from the central government.
