I bought this to make baby food for my daughter and it works great and everything that is seen comes with it so much more convenient. So yes I would say so.

Q: One video (now gone?) shows how each blade detaches from the upright stem. Was hers just defective?

I have used this for about 6 months. So far it has been great. Just make sure when you close the lid, the tip of the upright stem fits correctly in the hole of the machine part. Sometimes, if you dont fit the part in right, the machine will not run itself, so I think it is pretty safe. Not sure about the video that you saw, probably like you said, she might have just got a bad one.
