Instrument of the Future!!
This musical instruments are awesome! We got the techno so we can plug it into a smart phone or tablet and use the sounds that they let us download and it sounds just like a flute or an electric guitar, and all the other instruments that come with!!! Great effects as well. People love it and want to check it out and play it! Careful because some people are a little rough if you get my meaning!!! This is not a cheap toy it is a very well designed and mad. Musical instrument!! Worth every penny! Be aware that you can do “simple” stuff out of the box, but there is quite a learning curve to get advanced!

Fun musical toy
My son loves music. This more of a toy than a real instrument. However, quality is good and he is having a lot of fun with it. Great gift for someone that enjoys music or mixing sounds.

Pretty GREAT - but zero info and a little glitchy
This thing is great but there is almost no guidance or instructions (both with the product and on the web in general) as to how to get this thing to work with third party apps or troubleshoot it in general. The product comes with all Japanese packaging and instructions, but you can find relatively unhelpful broken English versions online. For others having the same problems I was having with third party apps, it's most likely a setting or option within the apps themselves, which are not specifically made to be used with the OT (and YES FYI it works with iPhone X with lighting adapter or older iPhone with 3.5mm jacks - but from what I can gather online does not work with Android phones). In ThumbJam in particular, there is a button with a little red record icon (below the b# button) where you can "link" it with your Otamatone and get it to act as a controller. It's a little glitchy and not perfect by any means, but SUPER FUN to mess around with and really was the whole reason I got the thing (to shred flute / sax / electric guitar / synth sounds in addition to the OT native sound). Still very surprised how little info there is online on this, other than some fragmented Reddit posts and comments on YouTube videos. A lot of people complain of their OTs glitching out or breaking, but I wonder if it's just due to bad directions or not knowing how to use it with 3rd party apps given the complete dearth of info on the web on how to troubleshoot. So in sum, it's the fun, quirky obnoxious thing that it's meant to be, with the ability to use some third party apps if you can fiddle with them long enough to figure out how to get them to work with the OT. The fact that it's so strange/mysterious and there's no info on it is, I suppose, what makes it so unique and endearing. So it's far from perfect but not meant to be - you can get it working if you have some patience and will definitely put a smile on your face. I never write reviews but wanted to get this out there to help others who are trying to get some info on this crazy thing. Enjoy!

The musician loves this
My son loves making music and has been playing drums for 6 years. Recently I have noticed how much he enjoys making music using other instruments. When he asked for this for Christmas I thought it was an expensive toy, but he really really wanted it. I am so glad I got it, much better than the "toy" I thought I was getting. He loves it and has had a ton of fun creating unusual music. I love that he's having fun and being creative.

Start with the smaller less expensive Otamatone
I first purchased the smaller tone and was immediately into the uniqueness of it. It had little downsides such as the play area is small for an adult and the sound was somewhat monotonous so unless you're the one playing it it can be annoying for others so the headphones and much larger size along with the promise of new sounds via the app drew me into spending the +100 for this model. The neck playing area is pretty sweet for playing. The headphone jack really allowed me to practice but the app is pretty miserable. Took a day and a half to figure out. Once I did I could only get a proper volume with my headphones plugged in and the variety of sounds really wasn't that great. I would've been happy paying more for the app to get more. Some of the settings were terrible, hence the 3 stars. So close
