About Cherry

Surprising
When you see a movie about women in the porn industry, you immediately think of broken women, usually prostitutes, who are taken advantage of by the pimp-like adult movie makers. And no doubt there is a lot of that happening. This movie is not like that. It's about a young woman who is proud of her body, who is comfortable in her sexuality, and who chooses to first take nude pictures and later to participate in pornographic movies. She does it because she enjoys both doing the movies and the money she gets for it. By the end she is behind the camera and no doubt making even more money. Some of the people around her, including her mother, her boyfriend, and a male friend who is in love with her, react very negatively to what she is doing. She simply walks away from them. Some of the professional reviews cited on IMDb's Metascore rating deplored the lack of conflict. There was plenty of conflict. Cherry - aka Angelina - simply refused to participate in it. She had confidence in herself and what she wanted to do and she refused to listen to anyone who didn't like it for their own reasons, whether it was jealousy or shame or whatever. Her mother didn't have any problem taking that "tainted" money, so shame on her, not Cherry.I was quite surprised by this movie, and I also found it quite interesting that actors of the caliber of Lili Taylor, James Franco, Heather Graham, and Diane Farr were also in the movie. I don't know why it got such low ratings, including a 4.8 out of 10 from IMDb. I usually go by IMDb ratings when choosing my movies, and I don't watch anything with a rating lower than 5 - 6 or above is preferable. I'm glad I ignored my usual rule and went with my instincts on this one.

"About Cherry" explores the porn lifestyle
I wasn't sure if I was going to like "About Cherry", but after viewing the DVD version I was very pleased with having taken the time to sit down and watch it. The performances are top notch and the story is moving. "Cherry" represents many young, troubled girls who find their way into the porn business and alternative sexual lifestyles. On some levels, the movie is graphic, raw, and disturbing, yet on other levels you see that the adult film industry is much like any other business with workers coming from varied income and racial backgrounds, but all in search of a living and perhaps a little humanity. It may not have been the intention of the filmmaker, but I came away more enlightened, seriously rethinking my own judgmental Christian view of why pornography exists. In the end, the main character "Cherry" finds a new life with some hope for the future; for her, it's a harbor of security and tenderness that I couldn't find fault with. Even in the porn business there are good people just trying to make a living (of course, the shadow cast across the industry is the fact that a lot of workers are being exploited, although to be fair to the facts, not all performers are; bringing these workers "out of the shadows" with trade bargaining rights and health care options might be a good step to adding some dignity to the profession). Considering the billions of dollars generated by the adult trade worldwide, it's a major, albeit largely underground, economic sector that is simply not going away; better to understand it and come to terms with its reality.

Interesting take on the porn industry but rushed ending leaves you wanting more.
Nice realistic take on the porn industry and the behind the scenes of it. Great sexy scenes and makes you feel for how much this field gets looked down on and how the staff in the porn industry gets treated. Some bad characters and good ending but felt like the ending all wrapped up and finished in the last 3 min.

Did I just watch a porno?
No, I didn't like this movie. It was disguised porn, and the glamorization of porn and literal BS. Does anyone want their kids to grow up to be porn stars. Movies like this will be seen by all ages like it or not. And more kids will think taking the easy money will be worth it. This industry will chew them up and spit them out. This is an unrealistic movie and although that's fine for some genres it's not for this one. The she lived happily ever after ending was stupid. Some people will be taken by the so called empowered woman storyline. Others will see it for the myth it is. Was she empowered? She drops out and worked at a dead end low wage job. All she had going was her looks and that was 99% youth. Empowered or in a society that preys on our youth? We are living in AA society that offers our youth little in future dreams. No one but those at risk from predators thinks porn is their answer.

A solid effort -- not exploitative
Should be 3.5 stars for having integrity and decent acting in the story it tells. The acting and directing are adequate but certainly not inspired, and as others have said, this is a step in the right direction for this genre ("innocent girl joins porn industry") without showing the nudity and sex inappropriately.

Derived but Believable.
The movie does a fine job of taking you from movie to reality, performances in this are very subdued and in that very well played. It conveys, for the most part, the dulled hits and emotions that we experience in life, delivering no great surprises nor any true redemption for the characters, their redemption is nothing more than life goes on, for some better for some worse. The flaw, if there it can be called that, is that the film is too sympathetic toward it's main character, especially her relationship toward the neutered and permanently friend-zoned male toy she drags about with her and then ultimately verbally and emotionally castrate for daring to have feelings for her. As this is very accurate behavior for most women, I hesitate to call it a flaw, but do call the fact that the movie wants us to sympathize with her rather than him a flaw. Overall it is a bit too in love with its main character who is a narcissist out of necessity for self preservation, but a narcissist none the less.

Entertaining but lacking something
An entertaining film about an attractive young woman who leaves her unpleasant home life to eventually work in the porn industry. But I found it a bit unbelievable that she has such a smooth ride, that there is no angst or threat, that there is no sense of possible danger in the life she leads in the big city. I did not expect the film to moralise on the porn business, but it could have done with a bit more about depth about her on the film set and what it involved, physically and mentally. The ending also seemed to be rushed, as if once she had made a porn film that was that. She is seduced by an lesbian who she apparently only meets at the party and next moment is living in a lesbian relationship with a porn director and is a director herself. Though not being up on the workings of the porn industry, I would have thought the transition from actress to director would have been a story in itself. And her reaction to her friend watching one of her movies was a bit OTT. Surely she would be aware that there was every possibility he would one day come across one of her films - no way she could hide once the films were available. All in all, the film is entertaining with an attractive lead, but its a too smooth a ride in a story about a seamier world.

Italian language
Dialogue and sub-titles are in Italian, and so it is rather boring for anyone who does not know that language.
